Dean of the Graduate School John Wilson announced that he is planning to resign from his position this June at the end of the academic year.
Wilson has been dean since 1994 and has been a faculty member of the religion department since 1960. He said he plans to return to the department af-ter he steps down to continue his projects exploring American religious history.
During Wil-son's tenure he increased financial support for doctoral students, particularly those in the sciences and engineering.
The fellowship program currently provides full tuition to all doctoral students, which was only available to doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences before the program was expanded. Summer stipends are also now available to doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences.
Additionally, the graduate school under Wilson introduced online application forms, making it easier for potential graduate students around the world to apply to the University. Wilson also shared in celebrating the graduate school's year-long centennial celebration last year.
"He has done a spectacular job," said Provost Amy Gutmann, recalling with esteem Wilson's notable work toward "the better integration of the graduate students with the undergrads."
The graduate school is not the only area of the University in which Wilson has been a leader. He served as master of Forbes College for nearly 10 years, from 1983 to 1992, and served as religion department chair from 1973 to 1980.
Wilson was unavailable for comment yesterday.
"I will miss him tremendously," Gutmann said. She added, however, that she understands Wilson's desire to "devote his time to scholarship."
Gutmann described Wilson's study as "a major work on the topic" of religious thought in America.
Gutmann said the University, under President Tilghman, is currently assembling a search committee to appoint Wilson's replacement.
