A week ago, against Lehigh, sophomore quarterback David Splithoff threw the ball 39 times for the football team. With the running game going nowhere he had no choice. Too reliant on the passing game, Princeton fell hard.
This week, Splithoff didn't have to carry nearly as much of the burden, as junior tailback Cameron Atkinson piled up 115 yards on just 18 carries, an average of over six yards per carry.
Working the option brilliantly behind Splithoff, Atkinson used his impressive speed to race around the edge of the Columbia defense, gaining important yards while forcing the Lions to respect Princeton's ability to run the football.
Though he did not score himself, Atkinson demonstrated that Princeton's offensive line can support a running game — something that is very encouraging for the remainder of the year.
