Men's crews blast weekend opponents

Sometimes an early season loss can be a good thing. Starting the race fast does not always work. Look at the hare.

Hoping to make like turtles and erase a shocking season-opening loss to Georgetown, the men's lightweight crew hosted Navy this weekend. The Tigers took their first steady turtle steps on Saturday, defeating the Midshipmen by over three seconds on Lake Carnegie. Leading from the start, the Tigers never relinquished and gained a much needed confidence boost heading into the heart of the season.

The heavyweight men did not enter this past weekend reeling from the effects of an unexpected disappointment. No, things have been going pretty well for the heavyweights thus far this season. The Tigers opened their schedule with a thirty-three second annihilation of Navy, and kept rolling this weekend in New Brunswick with a nine second win over Rutgers.

The Tigers headed to New Brunswick on Saturday looking to get off to a fast start. They did.

"We wanted to have an agressive first part of the race and I think we did that. We really got out of the gates," said senior stroke Mark Flickinger.

But the heavyweights are not letting their early season success get to their heads. They know their Aesop's, and will do everything they can to make sure they do not get complacent.

"Teams change dramatically during the season," Flickinger said. "They get used to each other and the weather, and they get a lot faster. We need to keep improving if we want to maintain our position".

With the heavyweights running to stand still, or maybe even take a few steps forward, the lightweights are looking to build momentum. A few good races and Georgetown will be a distant memory.
