Coming into this weekend's series of difficult contests, the women's water polo team was sure of its talent, but uncertain of its preparation. Their 2-2 record in four games proved both the team's concerns and its hopes correct.
Princeton (2-2) lost to Hawaii, 11-9, last Thursday in DeNunzio in their season opener. Two days later, as the hosts of the Princeton Invitational, the Tigers beat U.C.-Santa Cruz, 11-4, and lost to Brown, 8-5, on Saturday. They then beat Indiana, 7-6, on Sun-day.
For their first test of the year, the Tigers took on a Hawaii team motivated by a loss to Princeton in the National Collegiate championships last year. That mindset yielded results for Hawaii, as they managed to hold the scrappy Tigers off for a two-goal win.
"We made some silly mistakes and they were very good at capitalizing on them," sophomore two-meter Jenny Edwards said.
If that first loss gave the Tigers fears for the remainder of the season, Princeton's 11-4 win over U.C.-Santa Cruz to start the Princeton Invitational quickly comforted the team.
Later that afternoon, however, still inconsistent at the start of the season, Princeton fell to Brown in an upset.
"We were not supposed to lose to Brown," Edwards said. "This loss opened the door for a lot of teams in the East to gain confidence against us."
Before those other eastern teams got overconfident, however, sophomore two-meter Adele McCarthy-Beauvis dominated Indiana with five goals to give the game to Princeton.
"If she gets in good position, she's unstoppable," Edwards said. — TUCK HOLLIDAY
