Men's squash edged out by Harvard

After four hours of rallying back and forth against Harvard, the men's squash team was unable to defend its Ivy League title Sunday at Jadwin Gym.

In the final match of the day, Harvard's Shondip Ghosh defeated sophomore No. 3 Danny Ruther-ford with a mere two point victory in the fifth set.

Princeton pulled ahead when freshman No. 8 Will Osnato turned in a 3-1 victory. After junior No. 4 Peter Kelly suffered a close 3-2 loss, going 15-12 in the fifth set, the score was evened once more. The remaining five matches would determine this season's Ivy Champs.

Sophomore No. 5 Eric Pearson gave the Tigers a lead after his 3-2 win over Dylan Patterson. The rally, however, continued when Harvard's No. 9 beat senior Harrison Gabel 3-0. Despite a close call in the third set, sophomore Will Evans came through for the Tigers claiming a 3-0 victory in the No. 1 spot.

Princeton needed just one more match. The team looked to No. 7 Randolph McEvoy for the match. Harvard's Gray Witcher, however, managed a 17-15 overtime win in the fourth game.

Waging war for the Ivy title were Rutherford and Ghosh in the No. 3 spot. The players were neck and neck — 2-2 in sets, and 15-15 in the fifth — until the final moments of the match. Harvard, however, gained the 16-15 advantage with a lucky shot off the back wall.

Rutherford fought for the next point but his return fell too short and Ghosh claimed the match for Harvard. The winner of next weekend's Harvard/Yale match will determine which team is to become Ivy Champs. If Yale wins, the crown will divided three ways — among Harvard, Yale and Princeton.
