Men's and women's fencing both fall in close weekend contests to Penn

One day after sweeping through their competition at home both the men's and women's fencing teams saw their Ivy League title hopes dashed Sunday as Penn cruised past both teams by the identical score of 15-12.

The Tiger women suffered their first Ivy League loss of the season as Penn pulled away in the sabre competition by winning 8-1. Although Princeton was able to win the foil, 7-2, the Quakers won 5-4 in the epee to win the match and — barring an upset — the Ivy title.

The situation was much the same for the men, who came into the match undefeated in the Ivies and hungry for the title. Penn won some questionable sabre bouts that swung the momentum in the Quakers' favor and Princeton was only able to win one bout out of nine in the foil en route to the 15-12 Tiger loss. Freshman epee Soren Thompson was a bright spot for Princeton winning all three of his bouts.

In other matches over the weekend, the women beat Temple 17-10 on Sunday. Saturday, the women were at home and beat Vassar, Cornell, Farleigh Dickinson and James Madison handily, winning 20 of the 27 bouts in each match while the men blew past Vassar 22-5. — Clark Thiemann
