Though their seasons do not begin in earnest until the spring, members of both the men's and women's tennis teams were hard at work over the Intersession break.
The men's team started the break by hosting the Farnsworth Invitational at Jadwin Gym, Jan. 26-28. Teams from Virginia, Rutgers, Yale, St. John's, North Carolina State, Dartmouth and Columbia converged on Princeton for the tournament.
Seniors Kyle Kliegerman and John Portlock turned in the Tigers' best performance at the Invite. Seeded No. 2 in the doubles competition, the seniors blew past teams from Yale and Dartmouth before losing to the No. 1-seeded team, Virginia's Brian Vahaly and Huntley Montgom-ery. Vahaly also won the singles competition.
On Feb. 1-4, the women's team competed in the Rolex National Invitational, the third leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Grand Slam. Only the top 32 players in the country are invited to the tournament; the Tigers were represented by sophomore Kavitha Krishna-murthy in singles and freshman Skikha Ubroi and Krishnamurthy in doubles.
After a rough opening day in which the doubles team of Ubroi and Krishnamurthy lost to a tandem from SMU, and Krishnamurthy was defeated in singles by the Janet Walker, from the University of Texas, Krishnamurthy came on strong. She defeated Anna Monhartova of Tulane in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) in the first round of the consolation bracket and Baylor's Jahnavi Parekh 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3 in her quarterfinal match. She was forced to retire in her semifinal match due to injury.
Portlock and Kliegerman advanced to the quarterfinals of the Rolex Invitational. They topped the 22nd-ranked team in the country from UNLV before Scott Lipsky and David Martin of Stanford defeated them 6-4, 6-7 (7-3), 7-5. — ANDREW FUNK
