Democrat Godfrey retains Township committee seat

Princeton Township Committee incumbent Leonard Godfrey seized the committee's one open seat in last night's election with a Democratic landslide victory over Republican Jack Marrero and Libertarian Thomas Abrams.

Township Clerk Linda McDermott said Godfrey won by earning twice as many votes as the other two candidates put together.

Godfrey said he expected the race to be closer than it actually was. "I had a pretty convincing win," he said. "It was even more than I won by last time. I was surprised that I won so handily."

Godfrey added that Marrero's popularity as the past president of the Princeton Board of Education was a concern for him.

"I thought I would have a tough time because Marrero is well-known because of his work on the school board," he said.

Godfrey's challengers called for major reform to the Committee, saying that the public was displeased with the current management.

Township Mayor Phyllis Marchand, however, said last night at a political rally for failed Congressional candidate Rush Holt at the Nassau Inn that the landslide was a mandate from Township residents that they were pleased with the committee.

"We're all Democrats, but we don't always vote the same," said Marchand, who donned an American flag head band and a stars-and-stripes-patterned scarf. "The town has a great comfort level on that."

Godfrey said Monday he opposes the Millstone Bypass and advocates a professional deer hunt to curb the animal's exploding population. Another plank of his platform he highlighted was correcting the financial disparity between the Township and the Borough. Godfrey said he would work to restore the balance between taxes paid by the Borough and the Township for shared institutions such as the schools and the library. Marchand said she enjoys working with an all-Democratic Committee and looks forward to working with Godfrey for three more years. "Leonard has worked very hard in the committee," she said. "I am delighted to work with him again."
