Julia Allison shoots 144 on weekend en route to first place at Invitational

After toppling Ivy archrival Yale and the rest of the competition at the Dartmouth Invitational Sept. 17, the women's golf team did not have as much luck defending its home turf at this weekend's Princeton Invitational.

The Tigers fell to the Elis in team competition — finishing second by eight strokes — but featured an exceptional individual performance by senior Julia Allison.

Allison, who was on sabbatical from the team last spring, showed that she is back in full swing this fall. After an impressive opening round 73 Saturday, Allison took home medalist honors for the tournament after a blistering second round 71 Sunday. Her two-round score of 144 was the best she has ever recorded in collegiate competition.

"I was actually a little nervous going into the final day," Allison said. "I thought I had gotten a few breaks. After the front nine on the second day, I relaxed a little. I had five birdies, which I had never done before."

Fellow classmate Adrienne Gill, who finished first overall at the Dartmouth Invitational, closed out this weekend's tournament with the team's second-best score at 155.

"The one thing I was most pleased about the tournament was [Allison's performance]," Gill said, "since it's her senior year and it was on her home course.

"I wasn't devastated with my round, but I wasn't pleased. The bounces didn't really go the right way."

As a team, Princeton also finished first in Hanover, N.H., but — like Gill — the bounces didn't go the way of the Tigers this past weekend.

"As a team, I know we can do better," Gill said. "It's not going to be our fondest memory, but we'll move on from here and learn from it."

Senior Natalie Christensen was the third-best finisher for the Tigers on the weekend, registering a two-day score of 161. Sophomores Megan Milam and Vanessa Redman rounded out the top five for the Princeton Black team by recording a 167 and 171, respectively.

Princeton was without freshman Esty Dwek in its lineup at the Princeton Invitational. At Dartmouth two weeks ago, Dwek delivered an 80-73—153 for the Tigers to tie for seventh in the tournament individually and helped Princeton outmatch Dartmouth, Idaho State and Yale — all of which tied for second — by 21 strokes.

The Tigers will have their full lineup this weekend when they head up U.S. Route 1 to New Brunswick for the Rutgers Invitational.

"Having [Dwek] back should give us a boost to beat Yale," Gill said. "Not to sound cocky, but we should prevail."

Also, Princeton should be motivated to do better than last weekend's second-place finish.

"I think we'll come out of this with fire," Allison said. "When you come in second, it's definitely incentive."
