Athletes of the Break - Danielle Stramandi and Scott Denbo

After capturing its ninth-ever Ivy League Championship Feb. 26, the women's swimming and diving team hoped to top off its successful season with a strong showing on the national level.

Thanks to the performance of sophomore diver Danielle Stramandi over Spring Break, Princeton can rest assured that it has achieved that goal.

The Tigers sent four representatives to the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 16-18 in Indianapolis — sophomore swimmer Jenny Macauley, junior diver Erin Lutz and sophomore divers Katherine Mattison and Stramandi. All four put in fine efforts, but in the end, it was Stramandi who stole the show for Princeton.

Competing in the 10-meter platform contest March 18, Stramandi placed in the top 16 nationally to earn herself NCAA All-American honors and score Princeton's only points of the championships.

The sophomore finished only eight points short of claiming a spot in the 10-meter final — a feat even more spectacular when considering that Stramandi was the only non-scholarship diver to finish in the top 16.

Stramandi continues to train in hopes of qualifying for the U.S. Diving Olympic Trials in the near future.

Coming off his recent first team All-Ivy selection for the indoor season, junior shotputter Scott Denbo of the men's track and field team continued his dominance over Spring Break in the team's first outdoor meet of the season.

Travelling to the University of Miami this past weekend to compete in the Hurricane Invitational, both the men's and women's teams put in strong performances in their spring openers.

Leading the charge for Princeton was Denbo, who came away with yet another first-place finish in the shotput — with a winning throw of 18.56 meters.

The junior — who won the same event at the indoor Heptagonal championships and who provisionally qualified for the NCAAs this winter — dominated the shotputting field and led the men's squad to an extremely strong finish. Denbo also managed a respectable 21st-place finish in the discus — an event that he does not primarily focus on.

With the Tigers looking to claim yet another Triple Crown in men's track and field this year, Denbo will be called upon to perform even better as the season rolls along. If the junior continues his recent success, however, Princeton should be well on its way to reaching its ultimate goal.
