Last week brought warm weather and an explosion of flowers at Princeton. However, the hottest topic of conversation was not the seasonal shift. Instead, since mid-March, much of the student body’s attention was focused on room draw: the stressful and complex process where rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors pick their room for the upcoming year. Room draw is opaque, and the University has not provided enough reminders — nor adequate and accessible guidance about the process — especially about the group-selection aspect.

A sunny day was perfect setting for what prospective new members of the Class of 2027 called the “warm and vibrant” environment created by University administrators, faculty, and current students as they got what was, for some of them, their first look at campus.

“Needless to say, democracy: in Hebrew, we say ‘democratia,’” history professor Yair Mintzker said in his speech to protestors gathered in front of the Center for Jewish Life (CJL) on Monday, March 27. Over 70 protestors were present, voicing their opposition to a talk at the CJL given by Ronen Shoval, a visiting fellow at the James Madison Program, that evening.

After contentious campus discussion leading up to the event, Palestinian writer and poet Mohammed El-Kurd addressed University community members on Feb. 8, engaging with themes of Palestinian activism. The lecture, sponsored by the Department of English, the Princeton Committee on Palestine (PCP), and the Edward Said ’57 Memorial Lecture Fund, faced criticism from some in the campus community due to allegations that El-Kurd had made antisemitic statements. The event was moderated by Zahid Chaudhary, an associate professor in the Department of English.

On Saturday, Jan. 28, the Butler College and the Office of Disability Services hosted, as a part of Wintersession programming, a screening of “Growing Together: A Film on Family & Disability,” directed and produced by Sofia Pauca ’21. The documentary follows six families of individuals with developmental disabilities, including Pauca’s brother Victor.

Following the departure of Mollie Marcoux ’91, John Mack ’00 was appointed as the new Ford Family Director of Athletics at Princeton in 2021. In an interview with The Daily Princetonian, Mack spoke about what has changed since he was a student, the relevance of his diverse work experiences to his current role, and his goals as athletic director at Princeton.

Saskia Vogel, a translator in residence at Princeton for the fall of 2022, is a writer, screenwriter, and translator from Swedish and German into English. In 2021, she received an English PEN Translates Award and her novel “Girls Lost” was a PEN America Literary Award Finalist. Her debut novel, “Permission,” was published in five languages and longlisted for the Believer Award. She’s currently translating Linnea Axelsson’s epic poem “Ædnan,” which explores Sámi history as experienced by two Sámi families. The Sámi are an indigenous group recognized as one of Sweden’s official national minorities.

My heart skipped a beat when I read “Show Added: McCarter Theatre, Princeton, N.J.” How in the world was this Grammy and Oscar-winning, Latin-American superstar coming to this small college town in the middle of New Jersey?
