Rich Vyas ’14, a concentrator in the Wilson School, has been chosen as a winner of the United Nations “Many Languages, One World Essay” contest in the Spanish language. Vyas started studying Spanish when she enrolled in SPA 101: Beginner’s Spanish I as a freshman at the University.
Ten winners were selected for each language from more than 1,000 submissions coming from over 170 different countries. The submission deadline was March 15.
Contestants were asked to write an essay in 2,000 words or fewer discussing global citizenship and multilingualism's ability to promote it. Entries had to be in one of the six official languages of the United Nations — Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish or Russian — and could not be in the applicant’s first or primary language of instruction. Entrants had to be full-time University students of at least 18 years of age and sponsored by a faculty member or representative of a university.
