It’s rare to see a player take the leap from a supporting role to leading scorer in any sport, but that’s exactly what Princeton men’s soccer forward Daniel Ittycheria has done in his sophomore season. After a solid start to his collegiate career off the bench last year, Ittycheria led the Tigers on the scoreboard with nine goals in 15 games, achieving the second highest mark across the Ivy League.

On June 27, the beloved Fred Samara announced his retirement after 46 seasons as the William M. Weaver Jr. ’34 Head Coach of the men’s track and field team. Samara’s legacy will not be forgotten by the Tiger faithful as he retires having won more championships than any other coach in Princeton history.

Playing a sport at any level comes with increased risk of head injuries like concussions or traumatic brain injuries. “One out of every ten all-contact sport athletes will have a concussion each year according to the CDC,” Notterman Lab M.D./Ph.D. student Nicole Katchur wrote to the Daily Princetonian. “Not every concussion gets reported, so this number is likely a minimum estimate.”

Last year, Hall of Fame women’s lacrosse coach Chris Sailer retired after a 36-year career. She led the Tigers to 15 Ivy League titles and three national titles, including the program’s first national title, establishing herself as arguably the greatest lacrosse coach in program history. Sailer not only left the next Princeton lacrosse coach with big shoes to fill, but higher expectations and a more demanding crowd than the one that welcomed her 37 years ago.

As a captain of the women’s softball team who will begin their quest to defend their 2022 Ivy League regular-season crown on Feb. 24, senior outfielder Serena Starks has shown tremendous leadership on the field. Following the departure of Mollie Marcoux ’91, John Mack ’00 was appointed as the new Ford Family Director of Athletics at Princeton in 2021.
