On Oct. 2, the home stands for the Princeton football game against Columbia were jam-packed with people. From an amateur’s eye, it looked like what was the most well-attended non-homecoming game football had ever hosted.
I’m almost certain that the Class of 2024 and 2025 are tired of orientation activities, meetings, and how-tos. Despite the good intention of these events and recommendations, they seem to stretch ad nauseam into late September and early October. However, I thought it would be helpful to share my experiences in an effort to reassure those feeling out of place or awkward at the start of their Princeton career.

It’s laudable many universities are taking the initiative to expand the diversity of applicants through removing the SAT and ACT standardized testing requirements — something Princeton has done as well, though temporarily. It’s true that these exams are stressful, time-consuming, and ludicrously expensive. Therefore, they are predatory to minorities and those of lower socioeconomic status.
At 6:27 a.m. on the morning of Nov. 6, my phone rang. I rolled over in my bed, flipped it over, slapped my face a few hearty times to ensure I was up and ready, and swiped at the green telephone icon demanding my attention. I recognized the ID: It was a friend of mine.
In the United States, only 36 percent of licensed architects, 13 percent of engineers, 27 percent of tenured professors, and 37 percent of lawyers are female. Women are outnumbered by their male counterparts in all four of these professions, putting us in a minority — as is the case with many other professions.
I’m a little more-than-perturbed regarding Princeton University’s recent choice to include “Tiger King” star Carole Baskin in their recently released video asking students to take the “Princeton Promise”: to socially-distance, wear masks, practice acceptable hygiene, and join the fight against COVID-19.
On Aug. 6, I was one of the people whose life was turned on its head when the University chose to reverse all previous decisions for any in-person classes and resorted to solely online instruction. As a then-member of the Class of 2021 in the School of Architecture who had been guaranteed an in-person spot and a dorm, this drastically changed my future months as I was envisioning them. Ten days, many sleepless nights, and lots of tears and contemplation later, I elected to take a one-year leave of absence, joining the great class of 2022.
A few days ago, under the secure cover of the COVID-19 panic, the Biden assault allegations, and reports of killer wasps, a judge rejected the main claim in the lawsuit regarding U.S. Soccer and the embattled U.S. women’s national soccer team in their fight for pay equality. The press it once had is now gone, and it went otherwise unnoticed to those who weren’t actively following the matter.
When I cast my vote in the Colorado Democratic primary on Super Tuesday, there was one thing on my mind about which candidate I should support. It wasn’t about immigration, abortion, or student loans, even though those are extremely important topics in American society. I was most worried about something that hasn’t been put on the radar of most voting Americans: rural Internet access.
It’s about three p.m. on a Wednesday when I look up from the model I’ve been working on and ask aloud, “Hey, I’m going to Late Meal in a minute. Anyone wanna join? Anyone want anything?”
