The NBA has hired Leon Newsome ‘92 as its Chief Security Officer, the league announced last Wednesday. Newsome was a member of the 1989 and 1992 Ivy League champion football teams during his time at Princeton, and received All-Ivy honors in 1990.
Newsome brings 28 years of security experience to his new role with the league. He most recently served as the Deputy Director of the United States Secret Service, a position to which he was appointed in August 2019. He began his career with the Service in 1993 in the agency’s Newark field office, and served in protective details assigned to both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
“Newsome will oversee all aspects of security operations for the NBA, WNBA, NBA G League, NBA 2K League and soon-to-launch Basketball Africa League as well as the NBA’s 15 offices worldwide,” a press release read.
During his time with the Secret Service, Newsome oversaw the day-to-day operations of the agency’s 7,000+ employees globally. This is experience which the NBA believes will be incredibly valuable in his work for the league.
“Leon is an extraordinarily accomplished security professional and leader and we are grateful to welcome him to the NBA,” Bob Criqui, the NBA’s President of Administration, said. “His vast experience with the Secret Service on a global basis will be an enormous benefit to our fans, players, teams and staff.”
Newsome is also a graduate of American University’s Key Executive Leadership program, adding to his qualifications for the role.
“I want to thank Commissioner Adam Silver, Bob Criqui and the entire National Basketball Association family for giving me the opportunity to join such an outstanding organization,” he said in the release. “While I will miss the daily interaction with the dedicated men and women of the Secret Service, I look forward to getting started and working alongside the members of the NBA Security group.”
Newsome will begin working for the NBA on March 15.
