Making the best of a chance for millions

What color does one turn when one blushes? What director had a recurring role on "The Sopranos?" Who wants to be a millionaire? Jessica Burr sure did. Burr, a currently non-enrolled graduate student in musicology and an intern at the University's Educational Technology Center, appeared on ABC's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" May 4, taking home $32,000 in winnings.

"Being on the show was an amazing, once in a life-time experience," Burr said. "It was life-changing. Being in front of the camera and audience was nerve-racking at first, but you feed off the energy of the audience."

The show is filmed on 167th street in New York. "The set was much smaller than seen on TV. There were less than 200 people. And Regis was just as nice as he is on TV. I wish I could have talked to him more. He seemed like a warm person," Burr said.

When given the call-a-friend lifeline, Burr chose to contact Peter, a friend of her father's who works at Lucent's Bell Labs. She said she chose him because he knows a lot about geography, but also because the question she was asked related to "The Sopranos."

Coincidently, he had recently told her that he had not watched an episode of "Millionaire" because his family "watches 'The Sopranos' religiously."

He gave her the right answer.

Burr made it to the $64,000 level but lost when she was asked to name the horizontal bar placed over a vowel that indicates a long vowel sound. The choices were: a) velum; b) tittle; c) coronal; d) macron.

Burr said that if she had taken either Latin or Greek, she would have known the answer to the question. In the back of her mind, she recalled that "velum" was related to language. It is in fact a soft-palate consonant. The correct answer, however, was "macron."

What will she do with her winnings? Burr said that she will save and invest and pay off her credit card bills. The government will also take off $10,000 in taxes.

Burr said she was pleased to make it as far as she did. "In the practice session, I didn't even pass the finger questions. I had kissed the idea of the hot seat goodbye. I wouldn't trade the experience for anything."
