Ford to present awards to Rockefeller recipients

November 27, 1974 — President Ford has accepted Princeton's invitation to present the Rockefeller Public Service Awards in Washington on Dec. 4.

Dean of the Woodrow Wilson School Donald E. Stokes '51 attributed the University's success in obtaining Ford to negotiations of numerous alumni and "friends of Princeton" who are close to the president.

One such person may have been Donald H. Rumsfeld '54, a classmate of Vice President for Administrative Affairs Anthony J. Maruca '54. Maruca was involved in the negotiations, according to Robert K. Durkee '69, assistant to President Bowen.

"It's always hard to snare a president and we're delighted," Stokes said.

He added that the choice of Ford was particularly appropriate in the aftermath of Watergate since civil service had been under a great deal of pressure.

Three of the five award winners who have been announced are George Jaszi, director of the Bureau of Economic Analysis of the Department of Commerce; James B. Cardwell, head of the U.S. Social Security Administration; and George M. Low, deputy director of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
