As the Ivy League women’s basketball season draws closer to its conclusion, much still remains to be decided for the Ancient Eight. Princeton remains firmly entrenched in the top five of the league, looking to clinch a spot in the top 4 this weekend. Elsewhere, teams jockey for tournament seeding as three teams currently sit tied for two spots. Finally, the league’s bottom teams look to use these last few weeks to make some noise and end their season on a positive note albeit with some upsets.

Many times following an emotional victory, we hear of top teams falling victim to “trap games,” games against inferior opponents that may be overlooked. Princeton women’s basketball faced two potential trap games this weekend, but made sure to dominate those opponents, just like they dominated Penn last Tuesday.

On Feb. 6, ESPN broadcaster Rece Davis made one of his first trips to Princeton as a commentator, getting the chance to cover the Tigers and Penn Quakers' face-off on the basketball court. Later on this year, Rece will add to the many trips he has taken as a parent to watch the Tigers square off in their baseball home opener against the Harvard Crimson and to cheer on his son, sophomore outfielder Chris Davis.

The women’s basketball team took care of business this weekend, protecting Jadwin Gymnasium from conference foes looking to steal a win and move closer to first place in the Ivy League. Following back-to-back wins over Harvard and Dartmouth, the Tigers now find themselves tied for first place with Penn, hoping to sweep the season series when the Quakers visit on Tuesday.

The Princeton football team has declared themselves 2017 National Champions. Despite finishing with a 5-5 record and not playing in the Football Bowl Subdivision, college football’s highest tier, the team believes it has a legitimate claim to the title. “Alabama may have technically won the College Football playoff,” said a representative from the Princeton athletic department in a memo released Tuesday. “But Princeton beat Lafayette, who beat Holy Cross, who beat New Hampshire, who beat Georgia Southern, who beat South Alabama, who beat Troy, who beat LSU, who beat Auburn, who beat Alabama. We think that this clearly establishes Princeton as the best team.”

The women’s basketball team closed out 2017 in style with a dominating performance over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers at Jadwin Gymnasium on Saturday. The Tigers (10-3) earned the impressive 77-40 victory to close out the year with a four-game win streak and wins in seven of their last eight games.

Spending the holidays in the Hawaiian islands, the Tigers made the most of their trip in the tropics and came out first place in the consolation ladder of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. Their victory on Christmas Day capped off one of the longest road trips in recent memory for the Tigers, who have won four of their last five and have evened their record for the first time this season.

Princeton’s newest soccer team is venturing out beyond the Orange Bubble and breaking the mold of traditional sports teams on campus. And, it’s taking the University by storm with a 400 percent membership increase since its inception in September. With weekend trips across New Jersey, German '90s-inspired uniforms, and a membership that prides itself on community before contest, we had to hear more about what Wawa United FC is all about. Heading into this game against the Tigers, the Quinnipiac Bobcats had only lost three times in their last 46 home games. However, the women's basketball team did not let the crowd at TD Bank Sports Center faze them, and handed the Bobcats only their fourth home loss in the last four years.

After last Saturday’s performance in South Beach against the Hurricanes, the Tigers’ winning percentage fell to .286. Now, with many games still left in the season – the Tigers have more than half of their non conference games left plus their entire Ivy League schedule – the Tigers have plenty of opportunity to improve their record. However, for the average onlooker of Princeton basketball, a 2-5 start for last season’s Ivy League champions would raise an alarm.
