The highlight of my fall break, my crowning achievement, and perhaps the only tangible thing I have to show for this brief season of my life sits on the cold tile floor of my laundry room, stacked and folded neatly in a weathered plastic basket.

Last month, pop artist Ariana Grande and “Saturday Night Live” comedian Pete Davidson ended their engagement and, in turn, their dreamlike, potently loving relationship. Their breakup came on the heels of the death of Grande’s ex-boyfriend, rapper Mac Miller, who died of a drug overdose this past September. This school is killing me. How many times have you thought this? Once? Twice? If you’re anything like me, you completely skipped the thinking stage and have resorted to passively muttering these words under your breath 3069 times … a day. Don’t get me wrong, I love this school: the academics are phenomenal, the professors are renowned, the opportunities are endless. But let’s be real here — Princeton be draggin’ it.

It takes 14 minutes to stroll from Scully to Madison Hall — the most disparate housing locations on campus. Frist is always swarming with people you know. A disproportionate amount of your time at Firestone is taken up by whispered conversations. Solitary meals at dining halls rarely go uninterrupted. Cookies at Murray Dodge seldom go unshared. Don’t worry, you’ll all end up at Terrace at the end of the night.

Crouched on tarps on the Murray Dodge lawn in the cool afternoon air, participants immediately took to carving, painting, and decorating what soon became a beautiful and diverse array of pumpkins.

Step 1) Find friends who are as excited as you are (or just encourage friends to partake if you cannot find anyone who can match your enthusiasm). Once you have a crowd, and depending on the size, assign each person a character of a TV show that you all like or at least know a little about.

For many Princeton students, one of the few bright spots of the midterms slog is planning themed Princetoween costumes, events, and decor with friends. While Princeton’s premature Halloween festivities bring together a student body emerging from many days of library hibernation, an offensive theme choice can do just the opposite. Often the University emails a cultural sensitivity reminder at this time of year, although such reminders sometimes skirt around the words “cultural appropriation.”

It’s that time of year again. One day, everyone’s out sunbathing on Alexander Beach; the next, it’s scarves, sweaters and a whole lot of crimson.

With the impending doom of midterms looming over campus, students pile into Firestone and the third floor of Frist, a Small World coffee in one hand and a half-hearted determination to write their papers in the other. At the end of the seemingly never-ending tunnel of psets, however, is one of the best nights of the school year — Princetoween.
