Good morning!

It's awards season at Princeton once again as a few seniors earn some of the most prestigious fellowships. Especially as students struggle in both the academic and professional job market, many students seek fellowships to extend their academic tenure and form new connections.

Senior Sam Harshbarger ’24 has been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford next fall. Harshbarger is a history concentrator and the sixth recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship in the past four years. A data piece exploring Princeton’s Rhodes Scholars found that the number of Princeton recipients lags behind Harvard's number, especially in recent years.

The Rhodes Scholarships, established in 1902, are considered some of the most prestigious international scholarship programs in the world. 32 students from the United States are awarded this award annually with the application pool this cycle consisting of 862 applicants.

Harshbarger is a resident of Cranbury, N.J., and plans to continue his research on Turkey’s economic and political relationship with Azerbaijan and Central Asia before returning to Istanbul to work as a journalist or for a think tank.

Contributing Columnist Siyeon Lee argues that while “middle class“ is hard to define, it does not apply to students with families making more than $500,000 annually. “There is a lack of self-awareness that comes from Princeton students’ unwillingness to...acknowledge their privilege, Lee writes. She states that to address the issue, we must reject claims of a “universal middle class” and calls on Princeton to provide more opportunities for cross-class conversations.
