OPINION | Help us put down the phone, Princeton

The cannon behind Nassau Hall.
“Cannon Green and Nassau Hall, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey” by Ken Lund / CC BY-SA 2.0

Hi, my name is Christofer Robles and I am the Community Opinion Editor at the Daily Princetonian. I recently read an article in the Atlantic — now available via your Princeton email!  by Jonathan Haidt arguing a “phone-based childhood” is behind Gen Z’s mental health crisis. I immediately thought of how much I have tried to decenter technology’s presence in my life this semester, but have struggled because of just how connected every part of Princeton life is to technology. In my piece, I call on the University to have a more active role in tackling technology’s influence on mental health rather than continuing its culture of blaming students for their own struggles.

The University's room draw process for the upcoming academic year began in mid-March, with students current first-years, sophomores, and juniors participating in groups of one to eight individuals, with preferences given to higher class years through a random algorithm. This year, there are 1,852 available rooms across various draws, including residential colleges and independent housing, with fluctuations in room availability compared to the previous year, notably with decreases in certain draws like the upperclass draw. The process involves considerations such as room types, draw group sizes, and availability, with students advised to explore options and consider alternatives if their preferred choices are unavailable.
