Community experts weigh in on ANCHOR program: The University has announced its plan to donate $50 million donation to the Municipality of Princeton and local non-profits over the next ten years, including a $10 million donation to a non-profit providing property tax relief to lower and middle class homeowners. Some members of the community have criticized the plan's lack of focus on renters, calling the town to allocate more to aid residents who are renting.

OPINION | Diversity isn’t only important for excellence, it’s important for everything

Morrison Hall.
Jean Shin / The Daily Princetonian.

Hi! I’m Ava Johnson, and my column today is about the importance of nuance in arguments about diversity and excellence in higher education. I noticed that in President Eisgruber’s State of The University Letter — and a following Atlantic piece — his defense of diversity was incomplete. He defends diversity using statistics, which show that the academic standards for Princeton students were raised when the University ended its restrictive admissions policies. I argue that this doesn’t accurately identify what the most important thing about diversity is. It is undeniably important and commendable that President Eisgruber himself has taken this stand in the recent debate about diversity and higher education. However, consistently promoting the ‘diversity is good for excellence’ argument risks putting an undue burden on students from diverse backgrounds to exhibit outstanding excellence. Defending diversity is so important, but it must be defended in the most comprehensive way possible.

The Women’s Basketball team (25–4 overall, 13–1 Ivy League) secured a decisive win against Columbia on Saturday (23–6, 13–1), with a score of 75–58, earning a spot in March Madness for the fifth straight year. With Kaitlyn Chen, three-time Ivy League Tournament MVP, the team avenged their Feb. 24 loss against the Lions earlier this season. Unfazed by Columbia’s fans, the Tigers came out on top by “getting stops” — their trademark and infamously strong defense.
