A focus on unionized University staff

Courtesy of Caroline Kirby

Good morning!

The Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) at Princeton continue to promote and raise awareness of issues regarding the campus workers’ needs. David Beeson ’26 and Abdul-Bassit Fijabi ’24, both members of YDSA, argue that the University’s pay stagnation amidst rising living costs “shows a blatant disregard for the deplorable conditions that their essential workers live in.” In a companion piece, Lucía Armengol ’26 and Bryce Springfield ’25, also members of YSDA, assert that the University’s ban on worker strikes contradict the commitment to free speech.

The advocacy for workers’ rights has been a continual movement at Princeton. In 2018, the YSDA organized a town hall meeting where staff members shared concerns about job uncertainty, low wages, and sexual harassment. Later that year, YSDA delivered a petition in support of workers' rights signed by over 600 students

Unionization has also been a trend. Earlier this year in February, Princeton Graduate Students United (PGSU) organized a rally to demand fair wages and more affordable housing for graduate students. The PGSU’s union card campaign makes such organizing events an official union campaign. The YDSA has supported the unionization effort.

Today's Briefing:

Princeton professors weigh in on debate on academic rigor, divided on whether good for mental health: The ‘Prince’ spoke with sociology professor Sam Trejo and assistant psychology professor Erik Nook about their insights on student mental health on campus. Trejo’s research focuses on the impact of traumatic events on students such as the spillover effects of exposure to violence. Nook expressed the importance of having a therapist and acknowledged, “Hopelessness and loneliness are very difficult feelings for folks to handle and there are many resources.”

DATA | As Dillon Gym expands, analysis shows disproportional usage
Candace Do / The Daily Princetonian

For most students, Dillon Gym serves as Princeton’s primary hub for fitness and wellness. Dillon is free for all undergraduate and graduate students to use and closer to the heart of campus than Jadwin Gym, which remains largely exclusive to varsity athletes. As many gym-goers notice, at peak hours, students are forced to wait to use weight stations, strength machines, and cardio equipment. The Daily Princetonian analyzed data provided by Campus Recreation about peak hours.

PROSPECT | diSiac’s “DRIFT” redefines the capacity of hip-hop and contemporary
Russell Fan / The Daily Princetonian

DiSiac celebrated its 25th anniversary with its spring semester show, “DRIFT,” on April 22. “The dance company took to the stage with a vigor that ran constant throughout the rest of the show’s one-and-a-half hours,” Russell Fan, assistant Prospect editor, writes. “Multiple styles of music and dance were synthesized together to create a dichotomous harmony of moves: smooth yet abrupt, bold but delicate, free-flowing though well-restrained. Between the transitions of beat-drops or beat-ups, the dancers’ mastery of vastly-different dance styles, namely hip-hop and contemporary, induced awe.”
