In an annual address delivered to around 300 alumni, University President Christopher L. Eisgruber ’83 referenced press coverage of recent controversy surrounding classics professor Joshua Katz, taking the opportunity to reiterate the University’s free speech policy and allude to the possibility of a future statement from the University to “correct the record” on the matter. Eisgruber also discussed what he called a “chronic epidemic of mental illness” nationwide, views on climate change action and fossil fuel dissociation, and the future of financial aid at Princeton.

The quiet majesty of East Pyne was shattered on Thursday, April 14, as news spread across campus that Academy Award-nominated director Christopher Nolan was on campus shooting his upcoming film “Oppenheimer.” Hundreds of people crowded around the courtyard, some on the ground in the hot sun and others pressed against windows, jostling one another for the chance to glimpse a celebrity.

On Thursday afternoon, the University announced that it will be increasing its annual operating budget for the fiscal year 2022–2023, including a 6.6 percent increase in the total undergraduate financial aid budget, along with increases in support for graduate students. The total support for students will increase by more than $500 million.

On Friday, Feb. 25, a group of more than 100 Princeton undergraduates, graduate students, professors, and community members gathered in front of Nassau Hall to show their support of Ukraine amid the ongoing invasion by Russian troops. Michael Gordin is the Rosengarten Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the University and the Director of the Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts. This spring, Gordin is teaching a class on “The Einstein Era,” centered around “the most renowned, and most recognizable, scientist of the twentieth century,” according to the course description.

I love when my accomplishments make other people happy: like when I did well on the midterm exam I studied hard for last semester and my professor praised my performance, or when one of my friends told me I should ask for a promotion and I received it. These are things I ostensibly did for myself, but I cared more about how the people around me reacted to what I did than about actually doing those things.
