As the fall semester comes to a close, it’s hard to keep count of all of the Christmas decorations that have popped up around Princeton’s campus. On a brisk day in November, I was walking by McCarter Theatre when I noticed it had been decorated with giant Christmas wreaths. I took out my phone to snap a picture, but decided against it. Instead, I kept walking, fleeing the wind that cut through my jacket.

Covered in a wash of green light, the doors of Prospect House opened to reveal a mix of the old and new. The sights and sounds of a high school dance bumped up against the walls of the mansion as contemporary music clashed with nineteenth-century architecture. Welcome to Redemption Prom.

Many people associate instant ramen with college students, and for good reason. Ramen lunches, dinners, and occasionally breakfasts are so ubiquitous among college students that the Princeton University Store dedicates an entire shelf to this convenient meal-in-a-cup. It’s morning in Princeton. Students that live in dorms are probably familiar with the sound of a phone alarm from a nearby room. It could be a quiet chirp, or a blaring horn, laden with urgency. When night falls, one might come back to their dorm and see someone working on an assignment or a group returning from an event. By this time, some students may have already gone to bed; others may have decided not to sleep at all.

A long line of sophomores file into the Campus Club, anxious to get their hands on a frozen treat. The Class of 2024 Ice Cream Social is in full swing, the air thick with anticipation and humidity. Outside, a large crowd has formed on the lawn. Students dance to loud music while their peers snap photos in front of a black and orange balloon arch, their class year projected boldly on the wall behind them.

It’s 2 a.m on a Saturday, and I am once again attempting to organize my Spotify library. So far, I’ve succeeded in making a measly morning playlist and finishing my 20th listen of “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton. Glancing at the time on my phone, I sigh and shut my laptop screen to get ready for bed, knowing full well that I will not be continuing my efforts tomorrow.
