I spent two weeks this summer in the Netherlands, a countryIonce lived in and still know well. I was there for both work and play and spent most of my days wandering around the city of Delft on foot or bicycle, taking pictures. Yes, I am American — pretty typically so — but when I touched ground at the airport atSchiphol(yes, I can actually pronounce it properly in Dutch), I was determined NOT to be labeled an American tourist.

“Girl With a Pearl Earring: A Servant’s Life, a Master’s Obsession, a Matter of Honour” is Tracy Chevalier’s fictional recreation of the story behind Jan Vermeer’s famous painting. The main character, Griet, lives in 17th-century Delft, Netherlands. As Vermeer’s maid, Griet’s tasks include mixing his paints and modeling for him after he becomes aware of her interest in his paintings and her striking appearance. Although he maintains emotional distance from Griet, Vermeer is obsessed by her complex innocence. Even at the novel’s close, Vermeer’s fascination with Griet does not end and the story quite vividly lives on in Vermeer’s painting, now associated with Chevalier’s narrative.

At this time of year, the word “thesis” conjures images of hardcovers and bound pages, not films and art exhibitions. The latter represent the work of seniors pursuing creative theses in their final year of independent work. Senior writer Zoe Perot offers a glimpse into the pieces created this year in creative writing, theater and visual arts. Staff writer Nina Wade spoke with students completing creative theses in the dance and film departments.

I looked up through the glass dividing my workbench from the guy across from me. We exchanged a glance and shook our heads, silently acknowledging the desperation, woe and mild consternation that permeated Orgo lab. Everyone in the room was busily mixing, inverting flasks, separating fluids and heating and cooling substances.

Your nose aches.Your fingers are numb. You trudge quickly between buildings, hoping to limit your exposure to the outside world as much as possible, staring at your feet to keep from slipping on the icy paths, head bent into the bitter, vicious wind that scours your cheeks. Welcome to winter in New Jersey, although this winter seems to have been particularly — some might say unnaturally — cold. Thank you, Polar Vortex. “It’s time for it to stop, time for warmer temperatures,” you complain to your roommates. But wait ... perhaps you’ve missed the merits of the arctic imposition.

At Princeton, the Pace Center for Civic Engagement provides students with the opportunity to train to become emergency medical technicians and join the local rescue squad, treating patients around campus and in the local community. Having survived the Great Midterm War (GMW), having battled lab reports, problem sets, essays and exams, and coming away with only minor injuries (consisting mostly of wounded pride, cramped hands and paper cuts), I was ready to return home in glorious triumph to my family. But like another heroic figure wishing to return home, my journey was arduous and left me with a tale worth retelling.

This past Tuesday evening, Forbes and Wilson College faced off in the Men’s A intramural soccer semifinals. Both teams had a lot of honor to defend — Wilson for its infamously ugly architecture, and Forbes for its location beyond the periphery of Princeton University. Additionally, both teams were eager to prove their worthiness after the notorious 1901 Hall incident of 2010, which, as this reporter was informed, was so ugly it can’t even be mentioned.

I’m sure almost all of us have gone to bed hearing the words, “Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite.” Until recently, I took the saying for granted. Bedbugs, yeah sure whatever, good night. But with the recent news about bedbugs on campus, I’ve been thinking more about these nocturnal critters, and I’m here to tell you that, contrary to popular opinion, there are many reasons we should disregard the above nighttime adage.
