For its sixth annual Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Shabbat, the Center for Jewish Life (CJL) hosted Emily Ladau, a Jewish disability activist and author, for Shabbat on Friday, April 12. Ladau’s work as an activist began at age 10, when she made an appearance on Sesame Street to teach kids about what life is like with a physical disability.

As 2024's Leap Day drew to a close, students crowded the first floor of Campus Club in celebration of this once-in-an-undergraduate-experience opportunity. Surrounded by hundreds of stuffable frog plushies, paintable frog statues, and a three-tier, frog-themed cake, Campus Club was awash in green decorations, courtesy of the Princeton Student Events Committee (PSEC).

After 19 months of closure and a delay due to “unforeseen circumstances” related to the shipment of materials to the construction site, the Campus Recreation Pool at Dillon Gymnasium reopened on Feb. 16. This marks another step towards the completion of phase one of Campus Recreation’s renovation project, which includes the renovation of the Class of 1986 Fitness and Wellness Center, which opened on Jan. 29, and new athletics facilities in the Meadows Neighborhood. The redesigned pool will allow for the return of open rec swim hours, Princeton Swim Club, and Campus Rec-sponsored activities, and prompted the revival of the annual Cardboard Canoe Race.

Princeton's campus is ever changing and evolving with each new generation of students. Part of the University’s most recent efforts has been an ambitious expansion of fitness facilities in the form of the Class of 1986 Fitness and Wellness Center. In light of these efforts, the Daybreak team looked back at over 100 years of fitness at Princeton, with Dillon Gym at the center of it all.

As the first days of class brought the semester into full swing, patrons of the Rocky-Mathey Dining Hall encountered a sweet new addition to the servery: the dining hall’s new smoothie machine. The machine, which serves fruit flavored ice drinks during breakfast hours, was installed over the University’s winter break and began operation during Wintersession.

After 18 months of construction, phase one of the new Class of 1986 Fitness and Wellness Center opened Monday, Jan. 29. The opening of the Recreational Pool, which was initially scheduled to reopen alongside the central fitness area, has been delayed until Friday, Feb. 16 due to “unforeseen circumstances.” Aside from the pool, the first of the three phases of renovations was completed on schedule.

Unlike some of Princeton's more beloved critters, the birds of Princeton are often overlooked. However, fans of birds have a home with the Princeton Birding Society. We took a walk with them to learn more about initiatives to create more bird friendly buildings, as well as efforts to bring the joy of birding to the campus community.

“The Boy and The Heron” wasn’t supposed to be released. Hayao Miyazaki had already announced that his last film would be “The Wind Rises,” a fictionalized biopic on the complicated life of aeronautical engineer Jiro Horikoshi, whose plane designs were used by Japan in World War II. That film serves both as a testament to Miyazaki’s prowess as a filmmaker and a semi-autobiographical look at an artist's reconciliation with the inability to control the impact of his own work.

Today, Daybreak dove into the East Asian Library and the Gest Collection, which contains thousands of volumes of Chinese, Japanese and Korean Literature. We investigate its past, from the collection’s acquisition to the establishment of the East Asian Studies program, look at the library's presence in the campus community, and consider its future.

This year, graduate students have sought to unionize, creating a new body to represent their interests. This would serve as an alternative to an older body, the Graduate Student Government (GSG). From teaching loads to health insurance and international student opportunities, the GSG has had a number of missions since its foundation in 1989. Executive board members noted that graduate students’ interests and social environments are often overlooked by the University, making the GSG’s goal critical.
