Despite putting up an impressive performance early on in the Collegiate Water Polo Association title gameon Sunday, the No. 11 women’s water polo team fell 11-10 to No. 13 Indiana in a heartbreaking last-minute loss.

For the last two years, Princeton has been used to being No. 1 in Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division play. The team comes into this weekend’s championship as the two-time defending champion, off back-to-back perfect conference records to boot.

The women’s water polo team pulled off a three-peat today in Cambridge, Massachusettson Sunday. The Tigers (29-1 overall, 5-0 Southern Division) beat out Brown (18-5, 3-2) in Harvard’s home waters to win their third straight Southern Division championship.

It has been almost a month since the Tigers have played in their home water in DeNunzio Pool, but Princeton, which has not lost a league match in two years, has taken its winning ways on the road. The No. 9 Tigers (23-1 overall, 2-0 Southern Division) won their pair of conference openers on Saturday and extended their firm grip on the Southern division.

Since the beginning of the NCAA women’s water polo championship 13 years ago, one team is crowned as the best in the nation every May. Number one is a coveted spot. Players dream of it during the preseason and the offseason, and they dream of it in early morning practices. But for teams that don’t come from California, that dream has never become a reality.

Watching Blake Dietrick shoot the ball is fun. In the women’s basketball game against Oregon on Sunday, the junior guard hit every single shot she took in the first half — eight buckets on eight shots, accounting for 21 of the Tigers’ 55 points going into halftime. Did I mention she sunk every one of the five three-pointers that she attempted in those 20 minutes?

The men's basketball team opens their season against Florida A&M in Jadwin Gym. The game is indicative in seeing how Princeton will play without star Ian Hummer '13, who led the team last here in scoring, rebounding, assists, blocks and offensive rebounds. Hummer also led last year's Ivy League in points per game.

Winning is in freshman forward Tyler Lussi’s genes. Gustave Lussi, Tyler’s great-great-grandfather, is considered to be one of figure skating’s greatest trainers — he coached 16 world champions and seven Olympic gold medalists. In 2007, her younger brother Hunter, inspired by the Ironman races that their parents run, became the youngest person in the world to complete a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run at age 13.
