The football team’s 2014 campaign kicked off with a trip to San Diego, the longest journey the Tigers have made since head coach Bob Surace ’90 took over. That’s not the only unfamiliar territory they’ll be dealing with —Princeton is the reigning Ivy League champion for the first time since 2006.

Maybe you think of the renowned collegiate Gothic architecture when you think of Princeton, or maybe you think of Einstein or Jack Donaghy. Maybe you think of elitism or meningitis. I don’t know what you think of, but I bet it’s not football.

After earning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year honors and breaking the NCAA record for most consecutive completions, junior quarterback Quinn Epperly can add another title to his ever-growing list: the Daily Princetonian’s Male Athlete of the Year.

Despite the late date, a cold win blew throughout Sunday’s doubleheader as the baseball team drew closer to the end of a season that never really got hot. After a marathon 14-inning affair to start off the day, the Tigers (13-26 overall, 8-12 Ivy League) got the bats going in their Ivy League finale against Cornell, recording their only win of a tough four-game series.

“That ball went right past the head of Foote!” Seton Hall’s radio guy said after one of Seton Hall’s players lined a ball right back at the Tiger baseball team’s junior left-handed pitcher Tyler Foote. Everyone in the press box laughed at the play on words, including myself.

With Princeton coming in last place in the Gehrig Division of the Ivy League, it looked like there was a legitimate chance of Penn sweeping this weekend’s four-game set. Instead, the Tigers (12-22 overall, 7-9 Ivy League) did about as well as could have been expected, splitting the weekend with the Quakers (22-14, 13-3).

Sometimes, crunch time comes early in the season. That’s certainly the case for the baseball team.

The baseball team has scored more than four runs just once since March 16, and, in four games this weekend, there was just one exception. Only once did a low-scoring game go the Tigers’ (9-14 overall, 4-2 Ivy League) way as they swept Brown and were in turn swept by Yale.

After the recent weather conditions in New Jersey, head coach Scott Bradley could have easily blamed his team’s 13-6 loss on the rain. He did not.

Every spring, the world of college sports grows feverish with anticipation as the most important tournament of the season draws near. It is chaotic, and sometimes the winner seems to have been chosen at random. It is bittersweet, simultaneously the highlight and the biggest disappointment of many young people's lives. Oh, and there is usually pizza if you get there early enough. It's the Princeton Dodgeball Tournament.

The baseball team’s spring break was an eventful one. Princeton (5-11) faced some tough opponents, saw blowouts both good and bad and found reason to be confident in its pitching staff just a week before the Ivy League season begins.

Common sense and countless interviews indicate that moving from high school to college baseball is quite a task. Much to his surprise, freshman outfielder Danny Baer found that this is not always the case.

Tigers find offense and defense in Florida series against Michigan
(03/06/14 2:00pm)
The beginning of the baseball team’s season is always a mixed blessing. The Tigers (0-3) can usually count on getting shellacked at least once, as in Sunday’s 11-0 loss to University of California Santa Barbara. On the other hand, they get to spend time in California and Florida gaining valuable experience while temperatures in the Garden State hover around freezing.

The No. 9 men’s lacrosse team kicked off its season with a dramatic win on Saturday, giving the home crowd a show on the first truly nice day of the year. The Tigers (1-0) looked far from dominant against Hofstra— until the final period, when four straight goals lifted them over the Pride (0-2) for a season-opening 12-10 victory.

At the start of the last baseball season, you could count on two things: Zak Hermans ’13 and then-junior Mike Ford. As the snow thaws and the Tigers prepare to take to the diamond once more, however, Hermans and Ford will be following the action from afar as they travel with professional teams. Hermans, an Ivy League Pitcher of the Year, was probably the ace of last year’s staff. If Hermans wasn’t, Ford was the ace in addition to being the cornerstone of the lineup. Their departures – the former was drafted by the Chicago Cubs and the latter later signed with the New York Yankees – mean that Princeton will start this season with more questions than answers.

The No. 1 women’s fencing team made a statement this weekend, winning its fifth-straight Ivy League title by a wide margin. As the women celebrated their victory, the No. 5 men failed to win the league but pulled off quite a feat themselves, upsetting the top-ranked team in the nation.

The No. 1 women’s fencing team could not be in better shape going into this weekend’s Ivy League Championship. At 21-0, the Tigers’ focus is on ignoring the hype.

One of only a few disappointments for the women’s basketball team last season was its loss to Harvard, which snapped a 33-game conference winning streak. The Tigers (11-6 overall, 2-1 Ivy League) started a new streak with their next game, but the Crimson (13-5, 3-1) snapped it again Friday, downing Princeton 78-68 at Jadwin Gymnasium.
