On the eve of my twentieth birthday, a heavy knot of emotions — along with hunger — burdened my stomach as I rode the 30-minute train ride to Edison, N.J. The feeling was an aggregation of bottomless nostalgia and fluttering excitement. After getting off at the Edison train station and walking for 10 minutes through a residential neighborhood, I soon approached an expansive strip mall. Storefronts of Asian restaurants, shops, cafes, and other commercial spaces catered to the nearly 50 percent Asian population residing in Edison defined this shopping center called Festival Plaza.

Despite the overcast February days, love is in the air and students are in the perfect mood for romantic and platonic outings alike. Valentine’s Day is an optimal time to explore new spots around Princeton for a meal or small bite. In no particular order, here are five places near campus that you should consider going with your Valentine’s date.

At The Prospect, writers often review one of the many restaurants in town, from those that students frequent to some of the restaurants farther out. But we've overlooked late meal on campus, which remains one of the most popular options for students.

With a dazed sense of what to focus on, a blank stare is all I mustered as I faced the iPhone’s minutely pixelated screen, which occasionally lagged. On the WeChat video call, my face was visible in a small rectangle occupying the upper-right corner of the screen while the rest of it showed the faces of my maternal grandparents.

On the night of April 22, Murray-Dodge Theater bloomed with vibrancy as diSiac celebrated its 25th anniversary with its spring semester show “DRIFT.” When the show began, the dance company took to the stage with a vigor that ran constant throughout the rest of the show’s one-and-a-half hours.

With summer approaching, I am incredulous that my first year as a Princeton student is already coming to an end. Though the past two semesters had many hectic and stressful moments, I managed to make time for myself to decompress by exploring the wonders of Nassau Street. Trying new food on Nassau Street has been a way for me to not only get acclimated with downtown Princeton but also relax amidst the eventful, fast-paced days.

A set of rose-red doors adorned with golden, circular door knockers stood at the center of the stage in Berlind Theatre at the McCarter Theatre Center. Its imposing grandeur greeted and intrigued theater-goers at the Saturday show of “King of the Yees” by playwright Lauren Yee.

On a bustling Friday night, I was surrounded by an intoxicating energy in Frist Theatre, where Sympoh, Princeton’s only B-Boy/B-Girl (break-boy/break-girl) crew, was performing.

Strolling down Elm Drive at midnight as the wind pierced through my layers of wool and fleece, I was at an odd sense of peace. Whether it was the wintry chills that numbed my senses or the absence of students rushing up and down campus, the environment was just how I liked it: placid. Save for a few barely discernible silhouettes off in the distance, the road was a desolate slope of asphalt.

As Thanksgiving break approaches, it is an occasion to not only enjoy a traditional feast with family but also to try food from other cuisines. For me, Taïm — a self-described “Mediterranean kitchen” — is a wonderful step outside of the typical flavors in the Orange Bubble.

I arrived back at my dorm, chucking my belongings into my desk chair and trying to decompress my mind. The darkness of the room consumed what little was left of my motivation to stay awake, and soon my eyelids became too heavy to keep open. As my mind slowly shut down into a deep nap, I wondered what could have contributed to this unusual drowsiness in the second week of classes.

On the western edge of campus lies Alexander Street, a road rarely-mentioned among the student body. It may not have as many vibrant restaurants or be as commercialized as Nassau — commonly thought to be the soul of downtown Princeton — but it houses a hidden gem: Soonja’s Cuisine.
