Four filmmakers, Lynne Sachs, Emily Hubley, Su Friedrich, and Edith Goldenhar, showcased short films at a special “Women in Film” session of the Black Maria Film Festival on Friday, Feb. 7.

Hollywood blockbuster “Green Book” immediately sparked controversy following its Best Picture win at the 2019 Academy Awards. The film tracks a budding friendship between black musician Don Shirley, played by Mahershala Ali, and white Italian American driver Tony Lip, played by Viggo Mortensen. And though it is a heart-warming story good enough to win the Oscar, Don Shirley’s real-life family has levied accusations against the makers of the film, claiming that they were never consulted and that the relationship portrayed between Shirley and Lip is fictional.

Triple orgasms and ordinary men named Steve. Patronizing German marriage counselors and burgeoning queer identities. Colorful illustrations, workshops, abuse, childbirth, miniskirts, flooding, gynecologists, and tampons.

It was only fitting that President Christopher Eisgruber ’83 moderated what might safely be called the most contentious debate to ever rage within the Whig Hall Senate chamber. I refer, of course, to the Annual Latke-Hamentaschen Debate.

Even when gently crooned by an animated crab, the song “Kiss The Girl,” from the Disney hit “The Little Mermaid,” is more misogynistic and dismissive of consent than cute. By performing the song multiple times each semester, the Tigertones elevate it to an offensive and violating ritual.

“She was an expert at sautéing slugs,” said director Debra Granik, describing the wilderness expert who trained actors Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie for their roles as father and daughter in her 2018 film “Leave No Trace.” Though only McKenzie agreed to try the slugs, Granik assured the audience at a talkback following the film’s screening as the latest installment in the VIS Fall Film Series, “they were both willing to get dirt under their nails. There’s nothing prissy about this.”

In the past week, my home became a headline. Eleven Jews were shot and killed during Saturday morning services at Tree of Life Synagogue — where my sister taught Hebrew school and I went to my first bat mitzvah. The Squirrel Hill Jewish community, which has been such a glowing and prominent feature of my upbringing, became the victim of the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the history of the United States.

It takes 14 minutes to stroll from Scully to Madison Hall — the most disparate housing locations on campus. Frist is always swarming with people you know. A disproportionate amount of your time at Firestone is taken up by whispered conversations. Solitary meals at dining halls rarely go uninterrupted. Cookies at Murray Dodge seldom go unshared. Don’t worry, you’ll all end up at Terrace at the end of the night.

You don’t need to wear a ball gown to cram for midterms, but that doesn’t mean it’s time for sweats. Throughout the next week, many students will pull all-nighters and rush to hit minimum word counts. Coffee pots will be emptied and sleepy parents will be called by their tearful, strung out kids.

Whether it’s the chairs or my behind, one of them needs to go. Twice a week I sit in McCosh Hall 28 and attempt to listen to an ostensibly fascinating lecture, but inevitably I spend the hour fidgeting in discomfort. I hunt desperately for something soft to sit on: a jacket, a scarf, a binder, another person, anything! In warmer months, I often forget to bring sufficient protection and end up perching on my laptop case.

I have been yelling at prefrosh for two hours. My throat, sore even when I first entered into the deafening jungle of Dillon Gymnasium, cracks and splutters.
