While Saturday mornings may be a quiet time around most of Princeton’s campus, the Lewis Center of the Arts is bustling with activity — and performers’ instruments. Every Saturday, buses congregate in front of the arts complex, dropping off Trenton middle and high school students for a morning of performances.

There’s only one place on Princeton’s campus where you can create a realistic, full scale representation of Stitch from the Disney movie ‘Lilo & Stitch.’ Or, perhaps you’re more interested in spinning up a mug decorated with sculpted mushrooms, an artistic model of a face, or a homemade gift for a friend. Whatever your creative desires may be, the New College West Ceramics Studio — located across from the Addy Hall Coffee Club — can serve as an outlet.

The drizzly, blustery evening of Oct. 29 set the tone for Sinfonia’s Halloween performance, an hour-long program held in Richardson Auditorium. Sinfonia is a symphony orchestra that is composed of undergraduate students, the graduate population, and members of the local community.

It’s that time of year: the trees around campus are turning a brilliant yellow, filling Princeton’s signature cobblestone paths with crunchy leaves. Students feverishly study for their midterms at Firestone. And as the weather gets chillier, the Coffee Club’s doors are open, offering students a warm respite with its new array of fall drinks. As someone who spends most of their time split between Campus Club and the NCW Coffee Club, I decided to embark on the mission of trying the full slate of new beverages.

Frist Campus Center hosts various delectable spots for students to grab a bite to eat or drink, including cafes, a convenience store, and the much-esteemed late meal. Café Vivian, tucked into the back corner of Frist’s first floor, is a lunch spot that recently opened for the year. Attracted to the brightly-lit, retro-style entrance sign, I decided to check it out.

The Hulfish Gallery is back with a new showcase planned by the Princeton University Art Museum. The current exhibition, ‘Art about Art: Contemporary Photographers Look at Old Master Paintings,’ curated by Ronni Baer and Peter H. Fox, boasts the works of contemporary artists, including Marcel Duchamp, Vik Muniz, Jeanette May, and more. The included works span a variety of styles and media but are thematically united in their attempt to shed new light on classical pieces.

I’ve been thinking a lot about French toast lately. From the late-night Dean’s Date breakfast to talks of a final Forbes brunch — a Princeton milestone I have yet to accomplish — breakfast food has been a recent topic of discussion. Despite the frequent debates about the best dining hall brunch, I don’t typically associate breakfast food with Princeton. Instead, I think about my family.

Princeton Township’s second annual Porchfest was held this past weekend on April 28. The event, run by the Arts Council of Princeton, was founded to promote local artists by creating mini pop-up concerts across the town. Local houses and University buildings offered their porches to a slate of performers for the afternoon, while nearby businesses like Small World, Maman, and Jammin’ Crepes sponsored the event. The entire day was free to all visitors. The acts for this year’s Porchfest featured various genres, such as a cappella, jazz, and rock, and even included several on-campus music groups.

The Princeton University Orchestra (PUO) took the stage at Richardson Auditorium on April 22 and 23 for a stunning performance. The auditorium was full of Princeton students, locals, and visitors as the musicians warmed up, tuned instruments, fiddled with sheet music, and rearranged chairs. With the dim of the lights, the audience was swept away by a transformative, 2.5-hour performance by PUO.

Some of my favorite places to spend my dining points are at the Coffee Club’s two locations on campus. I frequently trek down to the modern New College West (NCW) storefront that overlooks Poe Field before an afternoon of studying. I also love the quaint café at Campus Club, with its homey vibe and frequent musical performances. Typically, I go for the basic, predictable iced vanilla latte. However, Coffee Club seasonally experiments with its menu and releases temporary items that reflect the weather, holidays, or mood of the campus. With the slowly-warming temperature of late-March and sunnier days, it was officially time for the collection of four new spring drinks to be unveiled. As a committed Coffee Club fan, I sought to break away from my conventional order and try them all.

Tucked into the back corner of Hulfish Street is a new café called Maman that opened in November 2022. Maman has a warm, airy atmosphere perfect for a catchup with friends or a coffee-laden study session. The interior is brightly lit by the many windows lining the perimeter, and the mixture of long mess tables and smaller seating arrangements create an asymmetrical, open plan. The café has a clean aesthetic, with a few flower arrangements and patterned dishware to accent the minimalist layout of the space.

Before I came to Princeton, the word “chill” was merely an indicator of temperature, often useful for describing the weather. Now, I use “chill” to describe people, places, classes, and almost all my Princeton experiences. It’s a blanket word with an overall positive connotation and an indistinct meaning. The versatile “chill” is a word my friends use for various — practically all — contexts.

The art exhibition “Samuel Fosso: Affirmative Acts” is currently on display at Art on Hulfish, a satellite gallery of the Princeton University Art Museum tucked behind the Nassau Inn. The exhibition, which runs from Nov. 19 to Jan. 29, highlights the life and work of Samuel Fosso, a Nigerian-Cameroonian photographer who specializes in self-portraiture.

I love my walks to The Daily Princetonian newsroom. The views of Elm Drive during the fall season are beautiful, with historic, stone-clad buildings and multi-colored trees. The paths are lined with orange leaves, chattering students, and whizzing scooters, bringing both a sense of the crisp autumn and collegiate liveliness.

Tony Award-winning playwright Tom Stoppard graced Princeton’s campus for a witty, thought-provoking hour of discussion on Thursday, Sept. 22. Stoppard joined creative writing professor and award-winning poet Paul Muldoon on the McCosh Hall 50 stage as a part of the Atelier@Large: Conversations on Art-making in a Vexed Era series.
