It has been an eventful few years for Dr. Katalin Karikó. After pioneering the mRNA technology behind the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine with immunologist Dr. Drew Weissman in 2005 — over a decade before the COVID-19 pandemic — Karikó received an honorary degree from Princeton in May 2023 at Commencement.

As of Jan. 1, the statewide minimum wage in New Jersey will increase to $14.13 per hour, according to the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development. This change marks the latest part of a multi-phase plan to increase the statewide minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2025. This legislation was signed into effect by Gov. Phil Murphy in 2019.

Undergraduate COVID-19 cases on campus have been on the rise since move-in, with a 20.91 percent positivity rate among undergraduates in the week ending Sept. 9. Some of the students who have tested positive expressed confusion with the University’s isolation policy and resources.

As the monkeypox (MPX) virus continues to spread throughout the United States, University Health Services (UHS) issued a message to the campus community, shedding light on steps it has taken to prepare for possible cases and exposures. The Aug. 11 email from Dr. Irini Daskalaki, Global and Community Health Physician at UHS, and Robin Izzo, Assistant Vice President for Environmental Health and Safety, marked the University’s first public acknowledgment of the virus.

As the spring 2022 semester begins, COVID-19 cases among faculty and staff decreased by more than 50 percent in the past week. The University COVID-19 Dashboard shows total cases decreasing from 146 cases in the week ending Jan. 14 to 62 cases in the week ending Jan. 21. With undergraduate students returning to campus this past week, isolation housing is now at capacity, with 241 students in isolation in total.

As the duration of immunity afforded by COVID-19 vaccines remains to be seen, experts suggest a booster shot is necessary to continue protecting against COVID-19, in a manner similar to an annual flu shot. The University is now administering these booster shots at its vaccine clinic at Jadwin Gym.

Less than two days ago, Princeton administrators described a universal mask mandate as a possibility that “remains to be seen.” Today, the University implemented exactly that: an indoor mask mandate for all vaccinated and unvaccinated students, faculty, and staff.
