From August 2020 to July 2022, Princeton’s COVID policy required all persons affiliated with the University to submit weekly asymptomatic test samples. Since Aug. 24, 2020, a total of 8,595 positive COVID cases have been reported through Princeton’s testing protocol.

In the spring of 2020, thousands of Princeton students were forced to shift to online learning. Professors, TAs, and preceptors rushed to adapt to Zoom while students struggled with burnout and a growing mental health crisis. As teaching methods changed, so too did course satisfaction, with evaluations and ratings seeing improvements in some departments and steep declines in others. Now, three years after those students were sent home, The Daily Princetonian set out to analyze how course reviews have changed before, during, and after the pandemic.

In March 2020, amid nationwide shut-downs and the rapidly spreading COVID-19 pandemic, the University updated Blackboard, then the primary academic platform, with information about how to log into Zoom, a new video conferencing platform. The University announced that classes would be conducted remotely for the duration of the spring semester, as students dispersed across the world.

Since Jan. 1, 2022, 26.4 percent of undergraduates have tested positive for COVID-19 under the University’s testing protocol, which includes both symptomatic and asymptomatic cases. The University reports that 31.8 percent of undergraduates have tested positive since the pandemic started.

On Jan. 5, Undergraduate Student Government (USG) hosted a virtual Town Hall with Dean of the College Jill Dolan, Vice President for Campus Life Rochelle Calhoun, and other campus administrators to discuss the beginning of the Spring 2022 semester, student return-to-campus, and new COVID-19 protocols. Students submitted questions, either through a Google Form before the event or through a Zoom chat during the event.

During the week of Nov. 27–Dec. 3, isolation housing on campus for COVID-19 reached its peak at 98.3 percent during the week. This number included 86 undergraduates and 15 graduate students. As is reflected on the dashboard, this total reflects students isolating both on and off-campus.

The University announced on Nov. 5 that the University-led COVID-19 vaccination clinics will begin administering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to children between ages five and 11, following authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the State of New Jersey. The University clinic, held in Jadwin Gymnasium, officially began administering pediatric vaccinations on Monday, Nov. 8.

Over the days immediately following the end of fall break, the University documented a total of seven cases among undergraduate students: three on Oct. 25 and four on Oct. 26. As of Nov. 1, the University has not yet recorded additional positive cases among undergraduate students.

The burdens of the past academic year caused a national mental health crisis for students this spring. Recent studies have found that depression, anxiety, and loneliness peaked for college students during the pandemic, and 83 percent of college students in the U.S. reported mental health “negatively impacted their academic performance.”
