Princeton to aim for 70 percent financial aid, 22 percent Pell Grant eligibility for undergraduate enrollment

The new report urged that the University “must be relentless” in pursuing enhanced socioeconomic diversity.
Louisa Gheorghita / The Daily Princetonian

Princeton strives for more socioeconomic diversity: On Tuesday, the University announced enrollment goals to increase socioeconomic diversity. These goals include reaching, at minimum, an undergraduate student body that is 70 percent need-based financial aid-eligible and 22 percent Pell-eligible. 67 percent of the Class of 2027 currently receive need-based financial aid. The Board of Trustees’ Ad Hoc Committee on Undergraduate Admission Policy also recommended bolstering the transfer program, continuing legacy preference in tie-breaker situations, and recruiting athletes more representative of the student population. This comes after the Supreme Court decision to prevent most universities from considering race, ethnicity, and national origin in admissions. These new goals follow a trend by the University to increase financial aid eligibility, with the most recent change being full financial aid for most families making under $100,000 annually. The Board of Trustees hasn’t given a deadline for implementing their recommendations but has said that the University “must be relentless” in its endeavors to enroll more students from low- and middle-income backgrounds.

Princeton alum Trey Farmer ’93 arrested for possession of child pornography: In January, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office was tipped off about child sexual abuse material allegedly linked to Princeton alum Roy “Trey” Farmer ’93, a prominent figure in Princeton arts and alumni spaces. Farmer was arrested last Friday for possession of child pornography. As an undergraduate, he was a member of Campus Club, the Chapel Choir, the Glee Club, and the Katzenjammers. Farmer has remained active in University organizations as an alum, serving as one of the co-chairs of the 30th reunion of the Class of 1993. He was also the president and board member of Queer Princeton Alumni (QPA) but was removed unanimously by the QPA board on Wednesday. Farmer also had leadership in the Committee on Regional Associations and Princeton Internships in Civic Service. Farmer is currently on the board of the New York Philharmonic.

OPINION | Keep the Performing Arts Council alive

Dusk falls over the reflecting pool of the Lewis Center for the Arts.

This morning, we have a guest contribution from Chris Park ’24, the former president of Princeton’s Performing Arts Council, the student organization that coordinates between the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students (ODUS) and Princeton’s performing arts groups. This year, no one ran for PAC president, and Park remarks “PAC’s days seem numbered.” Park notes that resources available for each PAC group have continually decreased over time and that PAC’s authority is often superimposed by ODUS. Park argues that despite that, students should not let PAC die out, and rather, advocate for a stronger PAC with more student engagement and authority.

Sophomore Pietra Tordin, in her first appearance for the U-20 United States women’s national soccer team, scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Colombia. Tordin, a midfielder for Princeton women’s soccer, has recently been training at international camps for the American and Brazilian U-20 teams. She joined the Brazilian team in late 2023 before being called up for the USWNT this January and hopes to play for the United States at the U-20 World Cup this August. During her sophomore season at Princeton this year, Tordin won All-American honors and numerous Ivy League awards. She’s also one of five players in Ivy League history to score 20 goals in both their rookie and sophomore seasons. In her rookie season, Tordin also earned the Ivy League Rookie of the Year award. The ‘Prince’ sat down with Tordin to discuss soccer, Princeton, and her ambitions.

THE PROSPECT | Why are VIS classes so difficult to get into?

Lewis Arts complex at night.
Abby de Riel / The Daily Princetonian

During course enrollment, classes in the visual arts (VIS) department fill up quickly. Ahead of Fall 2024 course enrollment, the ‘Prince’ spoke to Professor Jeff Whetstone, the head director of Princeton’s Visual Art Department, for insight into the scrample to enrole in the department’s courses. The VIS department offers genre and topical classes, all of which have high demand. During the Spring 2024 class registration season, 338 students filled 510 waitlist spots for VIS classes. According to Whetstone, all art majors and VIS minors were able to enroll off the waitlists to fulfill their coursework requirements.  Most of those waitlisted were not offered a spot, as there were still 372 requests representing 277 individuals at the end of the add/drop period. Whetstone added that the popularity of VIS classes has been steadily increasing and that the department will continue to plan for the future by hiring more faculty and growing “intelligently and strategically.”
