Today’s Briefing:

Faith-based organizations utilize limited spaces in Murray-Dodge Hall: Murray-Dodge Hall, home of the Office of Religious Life (ORL), is utilized by many faith-based groups on campus. This has led to a high demand for fellowship spaces. Religious groups have noted that they lack the space to host large events in Murray-Dodge, with functions spilling over into hallways and lobbies. Yet most religious groups do not want to leave Murray-Dodge. Joanne Campagnoli-Sismondo, the ORL’s Operations and Events Coordinator, told the ‘Prince’ that “what it boils down to is our student groups are very comfortable here, and they don't like to go somewhere else.” Nevertheless, several religious organizations have adapted to the limited space by utilizing spaces outside of Murray-Dodge for frequent meetings. For the rest of campus, Murray-Dodge Hall is best known for the Murray-Dodge Café, which serves free coffee, tea, and cookies from 3 p.m. to midnight on weekdays.

OPINION | The way we talk about climate needs an update

Climate change is intensifying, and we need new language for it. The words we use to describe events affect how we react to them. But the words we use for climate change don’t match the true scale of the problem. “Global warming” and “climate change” have their descriptive benefits, yet they only go so far to represent our planetary breakdown. That’s why we should begin to favor the term “climate crisis” instead – its more urgent connotations allow us to understand and communicate about that breakdown. While this change is a semantic issue, it carries real consequences for how we understand and feel about planetary breakdown. And hopefully, it will drive us to act.

PROJECTS | The 2023 DEIB Report
Vitus Larrieu / The Daily Princetonian

As DEI comes under attack nationally and newspaper circulation falls, the Daily Princetonian’s DEIB Board is continuing its work and releasing its third annual report. Over the past year, the DEIB Board has promoted diversity in staff recruitment, worked for the ‘Prince’ to better support current staff, piloted a content review program to improve on past work, and met with campus leaders over coffee to build relationships. Their annual report, which collects data on the paper’s present demographics and climate, shows that the number of students writing and editing for the ‘Prince’ who are on financial aid is increasing, but first-gen and low-income students are still underrepresented. Black, Hispanic/Latine, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, or Native American and Indigenous students are also underrepresented, suggesting that greater work is needed in the recruitment and retention of staffers from these identities. The report ends with goals for the new year, and the DEIB Board asks you to hold the ‘Prince’ accountable to those goals. They end the report: “The Daily Princetonian can only be as great as its fidelity to community-informed and staff-supporting journalism is strong.”
