Scooter ban spurs debate

Good Morning!

In a message to students on Friday, Aug. 18th, the University introduced a new policy, placing sweeping restrictions on Personal Electrical Vehicles (PEVs) including electric scooters, including a ban on these vehicles during the “peak hours” of 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekdays.

This is a major change on a campus where a scooter whizzing by is one of the most universally shared experiences. The use of PEVs has been a subject of debate on campus and in the town, including last March, when council members explored whether a scooter was a “skateboard” under Princeton’s municipal code. Prior to the University's announcement, certain PEVs were prohibited by a 1974 ordinance in specific areas of the town.

Many students, including athletes who practice at far away facilities and students with disabilities, rely on PEVs, and have spoken out against the changes in policy. In an guest contribution, a student suffering from an “invisible disability” detailed how their life on campus was made easier by PEVs, writing that “as it stands, the policy will hurt disabled riders and will only be moderately successful.”

In a different approach to shedding light on the situation, Head Humor Editor Spencer Bauman ’25 explores in a satirical article the daily struggles of disabled students on an inaccessible campus, and how the PEV ban could affect them.

Contributing Columnist Christie Davis, argues against Princeton’s legacy admissions preference, citing that although the University claims legacy status only comes from circumstance, that it has roots in former discriminatory admissions policies, writing that “in this way, legacy freezes an institution in the norms of decades past, paralyzing it from properly moving on into the future.”

She details Princeton's past discriminatory admissions policies, such as the concentrated effort amongst Ivy League schools to preserve their Protestant-dominated student bodies, and how those policies transfer over into the legacy student pool of today.

“Legacy policies are working as originally intended: they benefit and protect the privileged at the expense of minorities.”
