As anti-trans legislation rises, University highlights resources

Good morning!

The trans community in the United States has faced a slew of legal and political attacks this spring. So far in 2023, 494 anti-trans bills have been proposed in 47 states. 39 passed, 92 failed, and 363 are currently active. In just one month in 2023, the United States doubled the number of anti-trans bills being considered across the country from the previous year. In 2022, 26 of the 174 bills proposed passed.

On April 4th, 2023, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order that established the state as a safe haven for gender-affirming health care. In light of this news and in pursuant of Governor Murphy’s order, the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) and University Health Services (UHS) Trans Health Team affirmed their commitment to supporting transgender and nonbinary students at the University, including noting access to gender-affirming healthcare. Last year, an anonymous student spoke positively about their experiences receiving hormone replacement therapy (HRT) through UHS with the ‘Prince.’

The University has also worked to expand facilities for trans and nonbinary students. In December, an Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate initiated referendum calling on the University to “to investigate and provide recommendations on how the University may convert the majority of residential campus restrooms to be gender-neutral” passed. This was soon after the University unveiled plans to build new gender-neutral restrooms in new residential colleges amid advocacy by the student group Pride Alliance.

OPINION | Reactions: What's your Princeton pre-read?

Jon Ort / The Daily Princetonian

President Christopher Eisgruber ’83 just announced that “How to Stand Up to a Dictator,” the autobiography of Nobel Peace Laureate Maria Ressa ’86, is the pre-read for the Class of 2027. But what do students think the pre-read should be? Eight ‘Prince’ columnists recommend books to frame new students’ time at Princeton. The titles include R.F. Kuang’s “Babel” to Andreas Malm’s “How To Blow Up A Pipeline” to J.D. Vance’s “Hillbilly Elegy,” addressing themes ranging from civil disobedience to the pursuit of prestige to racial integration.

On Monday night, former Ivy League Player of the Year Abby Meyers '22 was selected No. 11 overall by the Dallas Wings, making Princeton the first Ivy League school to have two players drafted in the first round. Meyers builds on the already impressive legacy she left at Princeton, which included a career-high 29 points in the program's second NCAA tournament win, and a single-season scoring record, with 538 points in 2021–22.
“I'm excited to see her putting all that together, and I agree that her work ethic is amazing. Abby just wants to get better and make her teams better, and she certainly puts in the work,” Princeton women's basketball head coach Carla Berube added.
