Good morning!
Yesterday, Princeton welcomed prospective students of the Class of 2027 to campus for Princeton Preview, a chance for students and their families to explore the University. In interviews with the ‘Prince,’ many cited academic rigor and a strong sense of campus community as the key factors that set Princeton apart from other institutions.
This past year, President Christopher Eisgruber ’83 has touted academic rigor as a defining feature of a Princeton education. In an opinion piece published by the ‘Prince,’ he acknowledged student concerns about mental health but was emphatic about maintaining the University’s “challenging, high-aspiration academic environment.” Eisgruber stated that the goal of the University was to “provide students with intellectual and personal foundations” for future pursuits, and that a challenging period of academic study has “transformative benefits both in the short term and the long term.”
For many students interviewed at Preview, Princeton’s focus on rigor was a defining advantage of the University. “Professors talk about how they are always engaging with students, and I admire that dimension,” said Daniel Tu. Chloe Hartwel added that hearing student testimonies about adjusting to Princeton’s academics and learning to find balance was an encouraging process. “Even if it is difficult at the beginning, later on you can be really happy here,” she said. Attendees also highlighted the positives of meeting current and other prospective Princeton students.
In past years, interviews with admitted students have similarly highlighted the strengths of Preview in providing an immersive environment. In particular, past attendees noted that the student-run events, from testimonies to academic panels, provided a candid, personable glimpse into Princeton’s campus community. The experience of meeting fellow classmates also helped many feel welcomed to the University.
This year is the second year Preview has been held in-person since the COVID-19 pandemic. The second Preview day will be held next Tuesday, April 18.
