Continued debate on DEI in athletics

Fall 2022 Pride Night
Julia Nguyen / The Daily Princetonian

Good morning! Over the past year, the ‘Prince’ has followed conversations about diversity and inclusion in Princeton athletics. A year ago, AJ Lonski '23 shared his experience with homophobia on the wrestling team. In December, a 'Prince' investigation on the resignation three DEI administrators described the departure of Jordan “JT” Turner from their position as Associate Director of Athletics for DEI. The 'Prince' also chronicled tensions within the Princeton swim and dive team surrounding Lia Thomas, a transgender woman who competed for the University of Pennsylvania.

In the wake of the two investigations, Lonski returns to the 'Prince' with an opinion piece calling on the administration to empower DEI administrators in athletics. Lonski describes the Athletic Department’s handling of DEI issues over the past year “incredibly performative” and states that if the Athletics department “continue[s] to act as if there is nothing wrong, then change will never happen.”

Meanwhile, after almost four months since Turner’s resignation, Princeton Athletics has hired a new Associate Director of Athletics for DEI, Miles Smith Jr. In a statement, Smith wrote “I look forward to leading and serving in this fundamental role while working alongside student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and administrators to create lifelong impact while ensuring that Princeton Athletics is a place where all can grow as inclusive leaders.”

Todays Briefing:

Edward Tian ’23 creates GPTZero, software to detect plagiarism from AI bot ChatGPT: Edward Tian, a senior at Princeton, released a beta version of GPTZero, software that detects writing produced by AI. He developed this software in response to the AI chatbot ChatGPT. Tian said he thought about the “potential impact that its impressive prose could have on plagiarism in academic writing.” With his senior thesis focusing on AI detection, Tian already had ideas about the software before coding it over Winter Break. GPTZero has received extensive media attention in recent days. Tian says that the next step is to identify an “implicit bias” in AI-generated text, and he is now working with a few recent Princeton alumni to improve his software.

Tian is a senior news writer for The Daily Princetonian.

OPINION | Princeton’s “Free Speech Problem”

Angel Kuo / The Daily Princetonian

Assistant Opinion Editor Eleanor Clemans-Cope responds to claims that “wokeness at Princeton is destroying free speech.” She notes that many use Princeton’s dismal Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) ranking, which is 169 out of 203, to justify this claim. Clemans-Cope counters this argument, saying that Princeton’s “free speech problem” is imaginary and the low FIRE ranking comes from misrepresented data. She compares Princeton’s ranking components to that of the University of Chicago, which sits atop at #1, arguing that the differences are based on flawed assumptions and untruths about campus. Clemans-Cope also points out the “highly dubious” scoring of some components of the ranking, which contributed to Princeton’s low ranking.

NJTransit’s Alternative 1 is a threat to, not a savior for, the Dinky: Guest Contributor Darius Jankauskas advocates for NJ Transit’s Alternative 4 plan for the Dinky, citing that the other proposed option, Alternative 1 is too expensive. He states that “we shouldn’t fix the Dinky when its infrastructure isn’t broken.” Instead, we should work to improve the already existing train instead of getting rid of the train which has run “since 1865 in favor of a new glorified road.”
