Community mourns lives lost in Itaewon Halloween tragedy; Students and faculty discuss parents’ role in public education at POCC, Braver Angels debate

COMMUNITY REACTS TO ITAEWON STAMPEDE: At least 156 people were killed and 151 injured in a stampede in Itaewon, a popular nightlife district in Seoul, South Korea on Oct. 29. An estimated 100,000 people were in attendance, and this event was the first of its kind since COVID-19 restrictions were loosened. As Itaewon is a popular nighttime destination for college students, Korean international students shared their shock and distress over the events of the Halloween weekend. Issac Yi 24, president of the Korean Student Association of Princeton discussed the tragedy and expressed concern over a potential increase in tensions between older and younger generations in Korea.

BRAVER ANGELS, POCC DEBATE: On Tuesday, Nov. 1, the Princeton Open Campus Coalition (POCC) and the James Madison Program (JMP) hosted the organization Braver Angels, which has the mission of “depolarizing American politics.” The sponsors invited all Princeton community members to participate in a “respectful conversation touching all sides of a challenging issue,” according to the event’s description. The event was attended by approximately 35 people.

Senior Columnist Andi Greene 24 reflects on a recent interaction with someone who was visiting campus for the first time and told her she “had been taking our campus for granted” as the “sameness” of campus has become so normalized for her. This experience caused Greene to reevaluate her perception of campus and conclude that “at Princeton, it is necessary to experience actively and not — as that visiting friend said — take the positives of campus for granted simply because we know them well. In the two years that my classmates and I have left, we must reacquaint ourselves with our campus and appreciate the old in a new light."
