Hispanic/Latine Identity, Belonging, and Community: a Project by The Prospect

José Pablo Fernández García / The Daily Princetonian

Earlier this semester, The Prospect sought out Self essays specifically from Hispanic and Latine Princetonians in order to celebrate this vast and diverse section of our community that has not always been adequatley covered in our pages.

To start, you can read Head Editor for The Prospect José Pablo Fernández García’s essay on his experience pushing back against the bureaucratic molds that don’t make room for his Spanish name — including at Princeton.

Then, you can check out Frida Ruiz’s guest essay on searching for a sense of belonging while navigating culturally isolating environments. And lastly, read Sophia Colmenares’s guest essay which begins with an anecdote about making arepas, and expands into a greater meditation on how one makes sense of one’s identities in the face of so many external and internal expectations.

Beyond elevating these three voices, the hope is that these pieces are only be the beginning of a larger endeavor by the ‘Prince’ to emphasize the contributions of Hispanic people in our campus commutniy.

Opinion Columnist Tara Shukla argues that the scale of on-going campus construction “creates a sense of administrative deprioritization of student comfort and wellbeing.” While she acknowledges the University’s commitment to a net-zero campus and expanding the student body, she also writes, “Princeton should focus on prioritizing the needs of its present community.”
