 SPEAR hosts discussion on women’s experiences in prison; U. releases campus security and fire safety statistics

SPEAR EVENT: On Sept. 26, Students for Prison Education, Abolition, and Reform (SPEAR) hosted a screening of Val Kiebala’s documentary “Us Too: Women Silenced Behind Bars Speak Out” about Cynthia Alvarado, a formerly incarcerated woman, and her experience with the U.S. carceral system. The Daily Princetonian sat down with Alvarado after the event to ask her how Princeton students can get involved. Alvarado said that education is a crucial step toward reform and implored students to attend events like SPEAR’s to get involved with prison and criminal justice reform.

FIRE SAFETY REPORT: The University Department of Public Safety published its annual security report on Thursday, releasing statistics about reported crime on campus in 2021, citing dozens of incidents of sexual misconduct, 11 burglaries, 42 motor vehicle thefts, four minor kitchen fires, and one hate crime.

Upon testing positive herself, Thioubou describes facing difficulties every step of the way, from dropping off her test, to attending classes, to living with a roommate. Thioubou writes, “If Princeton truly cares about the well-being of its community, then it should consider making sensible changes to the current COVID protocols.”
