University Provost Deborah Prentice nominated to lead University of Cambridge

UNIVERSITY PROVOST DEBORAH PRENTICE NOMINATED TO LEAD UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE: Princeton announced on Monday, Sept. 26 that the University of Cambridge nominated Provost Deborah Prentice to become Cambridge’s first American Vice-Chancellor, the equivalent of the presidency at an American University. University President Christopher Eisgruber ’83 emailed faculty and staff that the University will begin looking for a successor to the provost seat after Prentice vacates her position.

USG APPROVES FALL BUDGET AT WEEKLY MEETING: At the weekly Undergraduate Student Government (USG) meeting on Sunday, Sept. 25, the Senate approved its $250,016 fall budget – which includes $22,000 in funding for Garden Theater movie screenings and a $10,000 reserve in the event that the Senate will need to hold a bonfire this year – and passed the initial step of a resolution to establish a Deputy Elections Manager (DEM) position, among other action items.

OPINION | The 3.98% A Year Later: Reconciling with the Rat Race of College Admissions

In a guest contribution, Yejin Suh ’25 reflects on the aspects of her identity and interests that she stifled in order to partake in the intensive college admissions process, which she likens to a “rat race.” Although the University boasted an exceptionally low 3.98 percent acceptance rate for the Class of 2025, Suh argues that the high stakes of gaining acceptance into Princeton can arrive at the expense of their true passions as they prioritize prestige and cave to the pressure of the rat race. In her case, Suh writes that she neglected her penchant for creative writing in order to pursue achievement at all costs.

“The thing about having to package and commodify an artistic passion to apply to college is that the line between authenticity and self-branding becomes easily, and irreversibly, blurred,” writes Suh.

  • AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR VISITS PRINCETON: On Friday, Sept. 23, award-winning filmmaker Ryūsuke Hamaguchi arrived at Princeton to participate in the Fall 2022 Belknap Global Conversation as part of a weeklong celebration of his films hosted by the Department of East Asian Studies, the Department of Comparative Literature, and the Program in East Asian Studies. Hamaguchi garnered considerable acclaim for his triumphant feature film, “Drive My Car,” which won the Academy Award for Best International Film at last year's ceremony and Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival. During his weeklong visit, Hamaguchi led students through a series of creative workshops and screened his work in the Garden Theater.
  • SEULS EN SCENE 2022: On Sept. 19 and 20, The Princeton French Theater Festival returned with its 12th annual performance, “Traces,” presented in the Marie and Edward Matthews ’53 Acting Studio. Contributing writer for The Prospect Regina Roberts reviews the evocative and mesmerizing performances of the actors and the play, which was entirely in French.
