Coffee Club delays opening of second location; Divest Princeton protests in front of Nassau Hall

Todays Briefing: 

OPENING DAY FOR SECOND COFFEE CLUB LOCATION DELAYED: The highly anticipated opening of Coffee Club's second location, originally set for Sunday, Sept. 25, has been pushed back due to complications in the machinery and set-up, which is drastically different from the ones in the existing location. The new location in New College West will cater towards the newer parts of campus and work to include these locations and students into Coffee Club. A new opening date has not been announced yet.

DIVEST PRINCETON PROTESTS IN FRONT OF NASSAU HALL:
On Friday, Sept. 23, Divest Princeton held a demonstration in front of Nassau Hall as part of the 2022 Global Climate Strike. The group, which consisted of many first-year students, sang various protest songs, chanted, and held up signs calling on the University to divest from fossil fuels. In May 2021, the Board of Trustees declared that the University would dissociate from particular sectors of the fossil fuel industry and established a faculty panel to provide input to the University to inform decisions regarding which companies and sectors warrant dissociation.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION PRESIDENT SPEAKS AT PRINCETON “EUROPE’S MOMENT” EVENT: On Thursday, Sept. 22, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered the keynote address at Princeton’s “Europe’s Moment” event. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of democracy, discussed the European Union's response to the war in Ukraine, and spoke about the ongoing fight against climate change.

“Those who were lucky enough to be born and raised in democracies — like me — can often take the democracy just for granted,” said von der Leyen. “Those who have lived in authoritarian regimes will know all too well how precious freedom is.”

FIRST-YEARS HIT PROSPECT: On Thursday, Sept. 15, first-year students descended upon Prospect Avenue in search of fun and mayhem during the first night that eating clubs invited the Class of 2026 to attend parties on “The Street.” Although the Class of 2026 represents the largest class of students that the University has ever admitted, UHS reported that the number of students who sought medical attention for alcohol-related reasons was comparable to that of recent years. Despite this, many students told The Daily Princetonian that their experiences on “The Street” were anything but dull, with many reporting wild weekend nights.

OPINION | When a club initiation becomes hazing

Guest contributor Aybars Önder describes his own experience at Princeton Debate Panel initiations, which he argues amounted to hazing. Önder argues that hazing does not brings a group closer together and can scare off potential members. He calls on the student body to “eliminate hazing from our community," saying "we must break our silence and expose it wherever it rears its ugly head."
