Dennis Parnell Sullivan GS ’66 wins 2022 Abel Prize

ABEL PRIZE: Mathematician Dennis Parnell Sullivan GS ’66 was awarded the 2022 Abel Prize given by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in the field of mathematics. This prize recognizes Sullivan “for his groundbreaking contributions to topology in its broadest sense, and in particular its algebraic, geometric and dynamical aspects.” Sullivan will be presented the prize by King Harald V of Norway in a ceremony in Oslo on May 24.

TRAVEL GUIDELINES: Beginning summer of 2022, students who wish to travel internationally with University funding will now be required to get special certifications or exceptions from University officials, according to revised guidelines by Princeton’s Global Safety & Security Unit (GS&S) released on March 21. Since these guidelines are not specific to COIVD-19, they will not be subject to change. Amid these revisions, University international travel programs are continuing to be reassessed with programs like Princeton in Munich now being held remotely this summer.

Columnist Abigail Rabieh discusses the recent passing of a Senate bill to make daylight savings time permanent and reflects on the backlash this bill has received over the idea of “losing” an hour of time. Rabieh writes how Princeton students similarly try to control time and adds, “The Senate has got it right in one sense — it does not make sense to flip-flop between times with the goal of developing our days to the precise right amount of sunlight. It is an example of human arrogance to believe we can make time bend to our will, or that we can squeeze every drop of productivity out of a day.”
