Q&A with 2022 George W. Beadle Awardee and former U. president Shirley Tilghman

Q&A: Shirley Tilghman won the George W. Beadle award this year. The prize is granted by the Genetics Society of America. Tilghman was awarded in recognition of her work while on the National Advisory Council for the Human Genome Project Initiative and her contributions to mammalian imprinting. Tilghman, former Princeton University president and Professor Emerita of Molecular Biology and Public Affairs, is the first person affiliated with the University to win this award. Tilghman sat down with The Daily Princetonian to discuss her thoughts on the award, her service to the genetic research community, and the influence of the University on her career.

CHLOE KIM: Former University student and Team USA snowboarder Chloe Kim became the first woman in Olympic history to win back-to-back gold medals in the halfpipe competition yesterday at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. During the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Kim became the youngest woman at 17 to win an Olympic snowboarding gold medal. In her first run yesterday, Kim scored a 94.00, which helped to put her over the edge despite scoring a 27.00 and 26.25 in her second and third runs, respectively.

Spotify misinformation: Large platforms and those who use them must do better

Columnist Gisele Bisch discusses the controversy engulfing Spotify over a podcast episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. The contentious episode featured Dr. Robert Malone, a physician and biochemist, “who openly claimed that the public has been ‘hypnotized’ into believing leaders with regards to the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine.” In her piece, Bisch cites other instances of Rogan himself spreading false information about COVID-19. Referring to Rogan’s 11 million listeners per episode, Bisch writes, “As daily consumers of content from distribution platforms such as Spotify, Princeton students must recognize the importance of holding such platforms and their creators accountable.”

The sham of meritocracy in Princeton admissions

Community Opinion Editor Rohit Narayanan discusses Princeton’s admissions system and explains why he believes the system should stop trying to sort students by merit. Narayanan highlights his point by laying out a thought-experiment where Princeton students would have to start applying to live in residential colleges and proposes a solution where “Princeton could eliminate its admissions department and form an admissions collective with other private colleges of similar size, expense, and offerings.” Narayanan writes, “Princeton assigns residential colleges randomly for a reason. If only it could apply that same wisdom to the much more destructive system of college admissions that it helps perpetuate.”
