Ruth J. Simmons named 2021 Baccalaureate speaker; USG Senate approves five new clubs

Todays Briefing: 

Ruth J. Simmons, President of Prairie A&M University, a historically Black college, will deliver the 2021 Baccalaureate address during the virtual Baccalaureate ceremony. Previously, Simmons served as the first woman president of Brown University, becoming the first Black president of an Ivy League university. Before Brown, Simmons was the president of Smith College, the largest women’s college in the nation. Moreover, Simmons led the University’s Program in African American Studies — now known as the Department of African American Studies — as the acting director, in addition to serving as the dean of faculty.

Five new clubs, including the Chinese Language Group, Minority Pre-Law Association, Princeton Corporate Sustainability Initiative, Princeton Society for Engineers, and Redefine Her Street, were approved by the USG Senate this past Sunday. This week was also recognized as Mental Health Week, which will include programming to promote mental health on campus. Lastly, the USG Senate is working on incorporating student input into the decision for who will fill the Assistant Vice President for Public Safety and Director of Transportation and Parking positions.

Sitting inside of Princeton’s Jammin’ Crepes, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill on Monday which will provide $15 million in federal relief to small businesses that have struggled amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill represents a part of the broader $100 million New Jersey COVID-19 plan that aims to aid small businesses and nonprofits in rebounding from pandemic-related losses. Jammin’ Crepes, along with a multitude of Princeton small businesses, have previously benefited from economic stimulus relief, including the federal Paycheck Protection Program that was signed into law in March 2020.

“Study after study finds that for every dollar you spend on a small business, 70 cents stays in the community. That is why we have to support our small businesses here,” said NJ Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker at today’s signing.

Perhaps one day colleges will reform their curricula to reflect the universal importance of non-English language acquisition in such a way that does not unduly burden B.S.E. students.,” writes Churbanova.
