Competing under the sun in Penn’s packed Franklin Field in the triple jump championship Saturday at the Penn Relays, junior Damon McLean tuned out the screaming and cheering as he focused on each of his attempts. After finishing second at this meet last year, McLean was determined to win and take home a gold Penn Relays watch. Bounding down the runway on his second try, McLean blasted out a wind-aided 15.95 meters, or 52 feet, four inches — and bested the rest of the field by half a foot.

Just two weeks after breaking the Ivy League hammer throw record for the second time, freshman Julia Ratcliffe refused to be stopped at the Larry Ellis Invitational at home on Friday night. Opening up the evening with a modest 64.64-meter throw, Ratcliffe started to heat things up with a long foul off to the left side. Flying through her rotations on the third attempt, Ratcliffe let loose a huge throw — that landed fair. At 68.80 meters, the mark not only blew away her old Ivy League record of 66.69m but also bested her own New Zealand national record by over a meter and a half.

In her first open 400-meter race of the outdoor season at the George Mason Patriot Open Invitational in Virginia last Saturday, sophomore Cecilia Barowski did not have high expectations. Still, when the gun sounded, Barowski took off fast. Driving over the final meters, Barowski took fourth in the competitive race, as she stopped the clock in 54.30 seconds — setting a new Princeton program record.

Freshman Julia Ratcliffe obliterated the Ivy League record in the hammer. Recording the third-best throw in the nation so far this season, Ratcliffe unleashed a 218-foot, nine-inch (66.69 meter) bomb on her last attempt.

The men’s indoor track and field team will head to Cambridge, Mass., this weekend in search of its fourth consecutive indoor Ivy League Heptagonal Championship. The Tigers are well prepared but will by no means cruise to an easy victory.
