Eating Club Task Force

While “The University” is not engaged in an intentional campaign to destroy the clubs, it has been actively pursuing policies that are not in the best interest of the continued survival of Prospect Avenue. The proverbial Road to Hell is always paved with good intentions.

Changes to the eating clubs’ member selection process will be deferred for one year, the University announced Tuesday morning. While the clubs generally supported the minor modifications, concern over lack of support from two clubs as well as the short amount of time between the announcement and the beginning of this year’s member selection process led to the delay.

The eating clubs will soon decide whether to adopt an alternative member selection process, based on recommendations issued last May by the Task Force on Relationships between the University and the Eating Clubs, University Vice President and Secretary Bob Durkee ’69 said.

Although there are a number of reasons why some clubs would choose to remain open only to undergraduates, it would be beneficial to both the clubs and the student community for the sign-in clubs to accept graduate student members, conditional on the support of the current membership.

Upperclassmen would feel most connected to their college if they had a single loyalty to it, not a new affiliation in junior year.
